I'm moving all my shit today! New apartment. As i'm packing up all this stuff i'm thinking where in the world did all this stuff come from?
Anyone have any good, bad, or other moving stories?

I hate moving. I have moved 43 times in my life and I'm tired of it. I have never had a driver's license expire with my correct address printed on it. Ever.

Oh my god!!! That's awful. So i guess asking you to help me is out of the question!

The most important thing about moving, if your friends are helping you move, is to not allow any beer to be opened until ALL the moving, taking place that day, is done. If the beer is opened earlier you have maybe 15 to 30 minutes after which all moving effort comes to a halt and everybody is sitting around drinking beer and chit chatting and ordering pizza delivery.

That's a great tip! I know to always buy beer and pizza, but i never considered the consequences of giving the reward early!

My wife and I lived in Bermuda for 7 years until 2010 and because it is such an isolated spot the shipping costs to move all of our stuff back to Canada was ridiculously expensive. We had decided to go traveling for a few years at that point so we sold everything that wouldn't fit into a suit case and a day pack each, mailed a few personal items like certificates and photos to family in Canada, then we hopped a plane for Rio de Janiero.
Best Move Ever! We are now minimalists.

That's a great story! I have watched a bunch of videos on minimalist living. Very tempting

@StrongHappySilly what is surprising is how liberating it is, you don't realize just how much time and energy it takes to maintain all your stuff, clean it, protect it, replace it and store it. There is a constant battle to avoid creep because we are constantly bombarded with ads to buy more stuff. If you have less stuff you will also have more money and more free time.

@Surfpirate oh man... you keep pushing these great arguments for minimalist life. I'm not the yet, but i could see it in my future

@StrongHappySilly What you can do is sort through your stuff and anything that you haven't used in the past 2 years, sell it on Craigslist or donate to the needy. Then clean up the rest of your stuff and see how that feels for a bit, if it feels good then minimize more until you stop seeing improvement. At the very least you get some more money and make room for new stuff.

@Surfpirate good point. A step by step process might be easier for some of us than all at once

@StrongHappySilly We went cold turkey and I have to admit that it felt a bit naked without all that shit to drag around.
