A long overdue admission: I have been trying to learn to play the guitar since 1973. I know all the chords and all the technical stuff (in my head) but can I make my fat fingers do what they're supposed to do at each end of the guitar? Can i Hell! Consequently, I can play a few bars - badly - of a tune by Status Quo (Caroline) and after 45 years I am getting a little bored with it.

Hmm..maybe try another, easier instrument? Maybe a keyboard, where it's easier to hit the notes. There is one I see advertised online that is a flexible strip you can lay on a table and it plays like a piano.

You can get them in all sizes, and they are on Amazon for $35.

Understand. Played rythem guitar since that time, too. Find a good lead and you'll sound fine. And play punk or folk country and no one will notice. Best wishes my friend.

You can read tabs. Easier to learn. The only chord I know is a power E. I don't know much about the music theory, but I'd play for 8 hours a day! I have a group on here called "GUITARS ONLY". I have a lot of master classes on there. If I can't help, someone will.

scales and arpeggios and... you know, whatever guitarists do that are equivalent to the boring stuff pianists have to do. make it MORE boring. make it so boring you fall asleep while doing them. that would be a good thing because that means you know them so well you can do them in your sleep (it doesn't matter that you can't stay awake while doing them). then do them backwards. then do them inside out. then eat something and take a nap without playing any scales. then do it all again.

You need to practice until your fingers can find them without you actually thinking about them - like walking . When you were a baby and just learning to walk , there was a lot to learn . Figuring out the mechanics involved - get your balance , shift all of your weight to one foot , lift the other foot up and move it forward , put that foot down , shift your weight to that one , then lift the other foot , while maintaining your balance . Now you not only don't think about any of these , in all likelyhood , you don't even think about how to get to where you're going . Practice until your fingers dance over the cords , without thinking about it .

I think you can do anything you set your mind to. If you know all the chords, pick another song and practice.
