Retirement is very overrated. I have been watching my 70 year-old mother retire this year (she officially retired eight days before her 70th birthday). She is not handling it well after the first couple of months. And it is not a money thing, either.

Many of us are creatures who need a strong sense of purpose (or who can at least afford to distract ourselves well enough to forget that fact) in order to truly live. A raison d'être. I am not so much worried about having enough money to retire as I am having enough life when I retire. I enjoy my work and most of those with whom I work. It is meaningful, interesting, and engaging. I need that.

My dad used to worry a lot about retirement. Always afraid he wouldn't have enough money on which to comfortably live, or that he would outlive his savings. He died when he was 56, and took none of his money with him.

If you have a job that you love, then working a little longer is a positive rather than a negative thing. Only you can decide when the time is right for you. I've known a number of people who said their "golden years" didn't live up to the hype. 😉
