Good afternoon.
I work in the medical field, specifically with dementia/alz patients. Been with the same company for years.
But lately, they are changing things rapidly in the management. Makes me very anxious and tempted to leave.
I want to help my patients maintain some quality of life. But these changes truly make me think of a career change.
As a social work major, what non-profits would you recommend? Besides CPS/DFC/FSSA, what else can I do to serve the community as an occupation?
These are the questions I asked myself when I can't sleep

To many private care residences are only concerned about profit. I've worked with a guy who once managed a place, and told me some of the stuff he was forced to stop spending money on to make quarterly numbers.

He said he has told his kids that he'd rather be put down like old yeller than living in a home as a patient.

Oh yeah. I have told my family repeatedly I don't want to live like that

As someone who watches people lose all quality of life, I strongly support the assisted suicide concept.
What are your thoughts? What if it was you, with no ability to feed yourself, bathe yourself, or remember who you are....

If we have the right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, doesnt that mean we can give up that life?

Kevorkian was a pioneer, and he had the right idea.

@Angus I agree 100%

Interestingly enough, the local hospital called. Wants me to interview next week.
Also the behavorial health center.

Both would require some more training/certifications but will give me some time to finish it.

Japan. America is cutting nonprofit funds right and right. These jobs will become scarce. Japan has a aging population without the young folks to support it.

Japan is tempting...but the law restricts me from moving the kids that far from their father ?

I hope you're sounding the alarm and alerting the public to any potentially abusive treatment looming for dementia patients.

But you can google a new place to work, like I just did, and found this Simply Hired page of job listings.

By the way Cannabis is being used successfully to treat dementia and Alzheimer's patients.

Cannabis oil aids in the neurogenesis process (new neural tissue), is anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant, so slows the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

Link: Some studies have shown that components of cannabis, including THC, appear to remove the Alzheimer's hallmark amyloid clumps from nerve cells grown in the lab. A study that gave a combination of THC and CBD to mice that showed symptoms of Alzheimer's disease found that the mice had improved learning and had less evidence of amyloid clumps in their bodies.

I've contacted APS twice in my career. I will not tolerate the elderly being mistreated.

Maybe Federal Employment vs.
City or State run facilities? More stability? Any VA Hospitals or clinics nearby?

i don't know specifically about nonprofits, but if you are not absolutely stuck on in-home service, an adult daycare center may be the place for you. i know an opening, too! it's a couple states over, though.

Tempting! I want to move somewhere new!

I spent the afternoon looking at the VA website. It's a possibility.

@Nichole765 va as in veterans affairs or virginia? anyway, i really do know of an opening in a daycare entity in mn. i can't guarantee that it is what you're looking for, or that you'd be chosen if you applied, or even that the position will be advertised generally. i'm not connected to it except as a client. but regardless, i know there is a nationwide shortage so you should have no trouble finding options.

@genessa veterans administration.

As far as MN, the weather may keep me away ?

Perhaps priding in home supports for dementia sufferers and their caregivers. Although, I am not sure if this is regarded as a reimbursable service.

Most of my job is in-home care. Trying to assist them with quality of care, assist the family with the skills to their needs.
While I don't know all the specifics, it is billed through Medicare. But as an individual aide, I'm not sure I'm licensed to get state funds

@Nichole765 Are there any assisted living places in your area? These are gerally privately run and can allow for a varied caseload with limited travel. We have several places in my area like this.

@Dwight that may be my best choice.
