Some Brief Thoughts on Time.

Events generate what we call time. Time doesn't cause events. Any event MUST involve motion. No motion, no event. Motion of necessity is change. No motion, no change. Change is what we note as time passing. If there is no change, there is no time passing. Finally, the passing of time that we experience is an everlasting series of "now" events".

Every moment you experience is "now". That's all you have ever known - "now". You have not yet experienced the future, but when it arrives, it will be "now". You experienced events in the past, but when you experienced them it was "now". Nothing, no animal, mineral or vegetable ever 'experiences' anything other than at the "present moment". In fact one could define time as being an endless passage of "now". Now an interesting question is how long is "now"?

Now again, how long is "now"? Is there an absolute limit to how long or how short "now" is? Is the "now" when you step on a sharp tack the exact same "now" as when your brain records "Hey self, FYI I'm experiencing PAIN!"? Probably not because there is a finite interval or lag between the two "now" events. I'd have to maintain that the only "now" of any consequence is the "now" your brain records. If your brain isn't of course recording anything - like when you're in deep sleep - you're not experiencing any "now" at all.

This video give a good description of our understanding of time. Posted previously by @tnorman1236

Time, space and Motion are the perfect triumvirate as they are simple aspects of energy matter and motion

Time/energy acting on Matter/space creates motion for instance throwing a ball
Matter/space in motion generates time/energy in the same way all energy is generated by matter in motion
and
Time/Energy in motion creates space in which to move an example of which is an electric current

This follows exactly the same rules as the time, distance and speed calculations
Speed is motion equal to the distance traveled divided by the time
Distance is space
Time is time

Well said but I have to disagree with you about deep sleep. It is during this time that your brain mulls over the experiences of "now" from that moment and before and puts it together sometimes in a hard to understand segment that we call dreams. The irony of "time" is that theists think there was no such thing until god created it. It is also most likely that some have come up with an idea of traveling backwards in time because of the sleep mode of our brain.

@johnprytz I agree.

even asleep, if you're dreaming, you're experiencing a now.

@johnprytz none of what you just said argues against the nowness of dreaming. some people don't remember their conscious now-time either, so the lack of memory part doesn't hold. they still have a now. being able to control things doesn't make now 'now" either (ever been to a dentist? longest "now" in history!) and no one said you were really conscious in a dream. i only said there is a now in it. and by the way, sometimes in a dream i AM aware it's a dream, and i have been known to direct my dreams and change the outcome -- and i very frequently remember my dreams as well. but even were that not so, while i am dreaming the dreams, i am in a different now, but it's a now nonetheless.
