I hate killing of any kind, but with whitetail deer in Kentucky, natural animal predators were eliminated, so deer have proliferated into dangerous nuisances. Not enough children are taking up hunting to replace dying hunters and keep the deer numbers under control.
People where I lived in the hills of eastern Kentucky actually butchered their deer kills, stored the meat in cold lockers and used venison for meat year around. It's much healthier to eat than beef, which is full of growth hormones, antibiotics, and pesticides.
, and i get that. they are just so majestic and beautiful. i couldn't imagine going deer hunting, it would be like going dog hunting or cow hunting to me.
@IamBane When I lived on my family farm near Morehead, KY, the place was overrun with deer, despite the popularity of deer hunting in that area. Most of the people lived at least partially off the land, so ate a lot of venison.
But those deer were bold..they'd join me, and my five dogs, on our walks and there was no use "siccing" the dogs on the deer..they'd play together, with the horses, in the evenings. Herds of deer would frisk along beside me when I'd jog up the mountain, leaping into the air and kicking out their heels. And they'd help themselves to my pears and anything else they could reach.
I was annoyed and told my neighbor he could hunt on my land, but of course not one deer came near his deer hide. And they still followed me. But when I hiked on other land, far from where I lived, the same thing would happen. After a few hikes, deer would start joining me. They'd spot me from across the valley and intercept me on the trail, start criss-crossing the trail and bounding around like rabbits.
