When defining your reality remember it is yours and not everyone's so do not become solicitous. Respect the fact that all people have different perspectives of life and its various realisms.

what is wrong with being solicitous? do you mean some other word, perhaps?

meanwhile, if i am in a dark alley and some guy whose reality is that the voices in his head say he has to kill the next little old fat lady he sees, i am certainly not going to be solicitous of him, nor understanding of his world view. i won't give myself time to respect it. i will put my walker in high gear and run like hell.

We all have different genetic makeups and we have had different experiences, so it makes sense that the personal realities that we create by thought are different. We must logically respect each other.

So far as that greater reality of which we are all a part, that is a very deep and awe inspiring mystery.

Sure, until I run up against people in whose reality other people are less than human for reasons they cannot control. Then there's a problem.

Hmm... The idea that there is a 'reality' outside of what is real strikes me as the height of anthropomorphism. Just because our tools for perceiving reality are flawed doesn't mean reality doesn't exist.
But being polite and showing empathy is a good thing.

I would imagine that everyone is entitled to their own beliefs but not their own realities.

I have the same problem with this post as the other comments. the use of "reality" in this sense is ambiguous.

there is only one "reality", that is the sum of all real things.

now, I understand that there are in fact things which are true for some people and not others, such as "I like chocolate", but that actually is not two different realities. the fact that I, the guy writing this, likes chocolate is true for everyone, whether they like chocolate or not.

This is not meant as an assumption that your point or intent is in any way incorrect, it is just that the point or intent is not perfectly clear given the phrasing.

whether he believes in snow or not does not change reality, so I'm not sure how your statement applies.

Is this an argument against evangelicalism or against rational debate?

If a hundred people point to an apple tree and say that's an apple tree, does their point of view matter?

So then is there one reality and each of us have our own view, or multiple realities, one for each of us?

@MythicalHulk Science is based on conventional agreements. Agreements about what is most likely or simpler and better to describe and predict; under some normative paradigm Science works within the popular and logical opinions of experts in a discipline. .

One's perspective is different than reality. We run into trouble when our perspectives don't match reality.
