Yep. Can be a scary and upsetting experience if you like the person. It's like they suddenly transform into an alien with a 50 pt lower IQ.

My wife will often give me a nudge when the conversation has gone too far and I have not only lost them but their eyes have glazed over and they are no longer even trying to keep up. It's usually a problem when it is a topic that really interests me but might be a bit much for most people to enjoy.
