I'm new to this site and I am a country boy. With that said, I don't believe there is a God. What is bothering me is that being a non-believer (fill in whatever you want to be called, I am a freethinker) seems to be a justification for some amoral acts. I am, as aforementioned, a non-believer but I still have the sense of right and wrong. What I have observed on this site has led me to a question. I'm concerned/confused with wether or not the majority or minority are justifying themselves by thinking if you are godless morals have no meaning nor value. What are your opinions on the matter?

Most people you know have the morals they possess due to upbringing and society, not religion. Christianity from the bible allows slavery, multiple wives, genocide and child abuse. Most people will not allow that this is moral despite claiming a part of that faith.

My rule of thumb is that any action that can or will harm someone needs some pretty heavy consideration. If it does no harm then it is probably fine.

If you tell me I can do anything as long as I can justify it with religion, there is nothing I could not do. Just try not to be an asshole and you will do fine.

@AdamHoople Perspective is at a premium. It is easy to hate and fear, we are part of the animal kingdom and tribalism has served us well in the past. Letting go of fear is difficult, more-so if you really understand what is at stake. Enlighten people when you can and move on when you cannot. The world is getting better in many ways, even if the US is sliding back. As for the excuse of immorality of the faithless, outside of harming others it is really a rather personal issue. Hope this is helpful.

Adam my friend, I think that the people on this site have a good sense of right and wrong. I point to our conversation two nights ago on chat.

However, because we have unburdoned ourselves of the shackles of religion, there are members who indulge in discussions and activities that they felt they had to repress when among beleivers. But they have venues on this site where like-minded persons can go for affirmation.

Stat thirty my friend. See you in chat.

@AdamHoople I read and point taken. Later

Yeah, unfortunately those that believe, believe we are all doomed as non-believers.
I’ve been accused of lacking morality, going to hell, etc...

Truth be told I find most atheists more Christian then Christians themselves.
Morality is different for everyone, but I do believe there is a common consistent morality that is born in most of us: don’t kill each other...
Some morality is learned based off society, which religion has some role in.

However one does not automatically include or negate the other. People are just people. Who really cares if believers think we are amoral. I do not. I used to spend my days proving how unjust religion is and go in these long rants about it. It serves no purpose.

Just be who you are and the cards will fall. I do feel for you though man. Being a ‘country boy’ you are likely in ‘Gods country.’ Oof.... Good luck finding a significant other that isn’t god fearing....

Hahaha
God fearing... I love when I see that shit. “I only date God fearing men!” Fucking idgets.... Why in Earth would you fear God?

We do not need validation of our morality. It’s like the old saying actions speak louder than words.

@AdamHoople me too!
Northern Michigan here.... A country boys dreamland. I’m good with being single, lol

Religion is the great appropriator, a thief who steals morals, behaviors and customs for itself, and then codifies them in writing. That we are moral creatures in spite of religion is a testament not to any deity or faith, but to our humanity.

easy peasy: they're full of it! they have no conception of what it's like to think for oneself and decide to be a good person for the sake of being a good person instead of to please someone who can punish or reward one for what sometimes seem randomly approved or disapproved behavior. keyword THINK.

Buddhist do not worship a god or gods; yet, their ethics oppose killing, violence and other "immoral" things. There are more Christians in prisons than atheists per-capita of each population. Christians believe they can pray for forgiveness and everything is OK. My family justified bigotry against black people as the Mark of Cain meant God turned Cain into a black man. I think atheism is not justification for some amoral acts. Many free thinkers study philosophy, including ethics, and act accordingly. Criminals are often people without empathy, who are very selfish. Atheism and theism have little affect on the criminal element.
