when i believed in a personal god i wasn't thinking about death at all. i just wanted not to be so lonely. i don't think i believed in any kind of afterlife even back then. i just had this vague image of someone watching me, to whom i could talk. i was a child for most of that time; i became an atheist at age 15.

Yes, the fear of death feeds a lot of lies. Even a lot of people who don't believe in God often substitute some other imaginary scheme that will allow them to believe they will not perish when their body dies.
I tend to think people should be allowed to believe whatever they can live with regarding that issue. But personally, I think it's best to find one's comforts within the already ample realm of well-established science.
