I heard a survey on the radio this morning, and thought the discussion would work here.

What is the oldest possession you have, and do you still use it?

I have a rocking chair I received as a present for xmas when I was 5. My great niece tore the seat out, but the wood is still solid. I plan on fixing it again. It was in 1965. It once flew off the top of our car when we were moving, going 60 mph. Made may moves and it is the oldest furniture own. And pretty much the oldest thing I own.

Think it is a Russian oil painting from 1786 (picked it up at a rummage sale from a Romanov) I look at it a few times a year.

If you disqualify art, the oldest would be an 1897 enlarger designed for 5 x 7 glass plate negatives. Haven't used it in decades. In the old days I modified it to use 4 x 5 negatives.

I have a drip coffee pot that is 65 years old that I still use. My every day dishes are at least 80 years old as are my oil lamps for emergencies.

I have an Atwater-Kent radio, my grandmother gave to me. I'm pretty sure she and others listened to FDR during WWII, but it dates back to the 20's. It's about four feet tall and over two feet wide, used tubes instead of transistors, and no longer works.

@Felinae Yes, it's in our living room.

@Byrdsfan It's in pretty bad shape, especially the speaker. It would take a very skilled person. I trained as an electrical engineer, and it is beyond my skill to restore.

I have a wooden rice holder bucket that belonged to my great-great grandparents...it has to be over 100 years old...my grandfather was born in 1898 and there is a picture of it in his house when he was about 5 or 6. I also have chopsticks from that time...

I have skirt hangers (3) that I was using in the 60's (that's the 1960's) and I still use them. They have been around the world twice with me and will outlive me for sure! 😀

I have a stitchery project that I was working on when I met my ex husband, so late 1981 or early 1982. It is a complicated design, and other stuff took priority over the years. I know which room it is in, but not exactly where it is. So, no, I don't use it.
