How can someone be 100% certain that a god doesn't exist? I do understand being 99.9% certain but 100% is just unrealistic.
Agreed. Atheism isn't 100% certainty though, it is seeing no substantiation and not affording belief to the unsubstantiated.
Since there's no reason to believe due to no evidence, gods are vanishingly unlikely and so there's no practical difference in how one acts or thinks or conducts themselves, between 99.99% and 100% certainty, so it's kind of a technical distinction anyway.
The same way people are 100% certain that god does exist..
Lack of evidence of existence is different than the pre assumption of non-existent of an entity. They are not the same but I got your point.
As an atheist i'm 99.999% sure that there is no supernatural being that takes an interest in our pathetic species which on a universal scale of intelligence might rank as bacteria compared to us.
Well said. You get it.
I actually am 100% certain that there is no deity of any kind. None of the other 10,000 or so deities that humans have conjured up have ever appeared and never will.
So just because something didn't appear we should be 100% certain it does not exist? We can apply the same logic to aliens and deny thier existence with absolute certainty. Not good.
Since it's an idea made up by people, and there has never been any evidence of its existence in the entire span of human existence, I choose to say I'm 100% certain there is no god. I'm also 100% confident unicorns don't exist. The other side would have to prove their existence first, or at least show me irrefutable evidence, for me to change mind.
How do you know Unicorns don't exist? How can you be certain? What if the multiverse theory were right and a unicorn made it here? What if there were a unique extinct breed of horses that have a deformed skull that gave birth to the legend? What if .... There is unlimited scenarios but the point is the same. You can never be certain that a thing do or don't exist.
I am 100% certain about a lot of things! The sun rises in tbe east; death is certain; taxes are inevitable; water is wet, or frozen, or vapor; breaking a bone is not good for you; i like some foods, dislike others; cheat me, I do not forget; and ETC........
Everybody is certain of more than one thing, they just haven't thought about it & jump on that "ooohhh, I am uncertain" silliness!
What you described is not what absolute certainty is but just an observation of recurring phenomenas. You got things mixed up. Don't worry, this is a common mistake.
@IdenIzzat umm, no. Just no...you deny death happens? The sun might come up somewhere else someday? Breaking a bone is a good thing? Sounds pretty silly to me......
@AnneWimsey it's just a matter of time until we beat death. The sun and earrh will not be here forever.
Good and bad is relative.
Oversimplification is practical but not always accurate.
@IdenIzzat " beat death" ...for every species, or just our own? Or not! Death in the bigger scheme of life is a Good & necessary thing! No soil without decay!
@AnneWimsey well it all depends on what definition of life you use. I was referring to the mind/conscious upload. It's just a matter of time until we 'not all but most likely rich people who can afford it' beat death.
@IdenIzzat no other species?
@AnneWimsey what use to upload other species conscious if they are not conscious of their own mortality? We're the highest form of life that we know of. We are aware of death and that is a part of what we use to justify our superiority.
If you referring to uploading pet's minds to entertain their owners then I don't know. I haven't thought about that and I see no practical use of uploading any living begin mind but the humans.
