Though I am an atheist, I am a Jew by birth and by tradition - my mother, grandmother and great-grandmother were Jewish. I am deeply saddened at the rash of violence over the last week against Jews, African-Americans and political figures.
Yesterday we had our own scare in the store where I work. A couple came in with the intent of shoplifting. We know this because they have stolen from us before. But this time was different, the man was armed.
I was asked to watch them as they wandered through the store. His pistol was clearly visible, tucked into his pants, "imprinting" on his shirt. His "SS" tattoo was also clearly visible on the back of his head. This made me nervous, but scared one of the young women working with me last night. Our lost prevention person called the police to come to the store just in case. They left without taking anything (though they tried) and without incident.
We are a nation filled with hate. With three national incidents this week, two shootings and a series of mail-bombs, it is easy to forget that most of Americans are good, law abiding people. That the president is not an example of American morality. That there will always be people with an "us versus them" mentality. But we need to overcome these flaws in our nation's morals and work towards a unified front against the hatred and violence.
I hate that this is happening also. Even so, it is Donald Trump who talks of "us vs. them" in tweets and personal rallies. It plays to his base which happens to have Nazis, Fascists, and Klansmen. Trump then blames media for displaying the same message he is trying to send. He takes no responsibility. We can only blame those who are in power right now. Trump and his GOP are the ones in power. Vote blue and restore sanity again.
You don’t need to be Jewish to find antisemitism abhorrent. This was a horrific act, but sadly not unexpected with the heightened tensions and iinflamed rhetoric we hear from all quarters. The mail bomber from Florida is an other example of the increasing polarisation of society. It seems that political opponents are regarded as fair targets for violence by certain right wing zealots. These incidents are in the USA, but there is increased racism and intolerance of minorities all over the world. Our present leaders don’t seem to be trying to bring peoples together but the opposite by retreating to isolationist positions. Mr Trump just the worst and most extreme of them at the moment. My commiserations to anyone who has experienced any of this hatred first hand.
As a cultural Jew I understand where you are coming from. I'd like to share your post with my Cultural Judaism Group. This is the worst anti-semitism in my lifetime. Please feel free to check the group out.
Yes, you may. David
