The levels are not linear. The first few are easily achieved. Once you hit level seven, - - progress becomes arduous.

So what’s the difference between levels?
@Grace18 not much, to be honest. You can set up a group, your posts don't need to be approved etc. Apparently you get a t-shirt at 8 or something.
