It looks like the new in thing is the Kindle--representing someone being classy and knowledgeable. So even though I am not that classy and knowledgeable, I want to buy one. What's your experience with this device? Is it easier to simply buy/rent a hard copy book?

Love mine. There are more advantages than just size and portability. You can also highlight, search, bookmark, etc. Makes it 1000x better than physical books.

When I went to China for a month for business, I knew there would be no way I could take enough reading material, and I did not know if I would be able to buy English language books where I was going. At the time, Kindle did not allow you to get books from the library, so I bought a Nook (Barnes and Noble). This has since changed. One thing I love is the ability to immodestly purchase the sequel at 3 am.

You can get the kindle app for your phone or tablet. I don’t bother with it. Most of the ebooks I read are borrowed from the public library and I use their app. I read them on my iPad. I don’t see the need to have a separate device for ebooks.

I rarely buy new full priced books so I don't like paying that much for the books. I used one for textbooks for a while but didn't like it for that. The pages and flipping through them looking for things is one of the things that helps reinforce the things learned as you read.

Bought one a number of years ago. Love it. I still do read paper books and enjoy the analog experience.

I love mine! If you like going to the library or book store I wouldn't think it worth it. I have a kindle dx so I do all my internet on it including streaming movies.
