Have any of you dealt with alcoholism? I've been drinking every night for over a decade. My dad was an extremely heavy drinker. He got a DUI when I was in middle school. In Nebraska anything below . 08. He blew over a . 4! He was medically pronounced dead! He had to go to in patient treatment. Either that or jail. I need to quit smoking as well. If I don't drink, I have a near impossible time sleeping. I get nausea almost every single morning. Military buddy of mine was bad. They made him drink epicack. Another friend was really bad. He went to the doctor, and said the pills they gave him were $1000 a piece! Smoking and drinking are just costing too much money. And my health is starting to suffer because of it.

Alcohol and herion are the only two drugs that I know of that if used regurlary, and stop suddenly, you can die.I want to slowly ween myself off of both. I think I just need to adress it with a doctor. I've been thinking of going to a hypnotist. I don't want to be put on pills, or a patch. Plus if I go to a hypnotist, it won't be on my medical records. However, the closest one is 80 miles away. Said it might take 3 sessions @250 each! My insurance won't cover any of it.

Thoughts?

Dear Person,
You need to go to inpatient treatment for addiction soon. I am not clear if you are addicted to alcohol or to alcohol and heroin. But either way, get yourself to a doctor or treatment facility while you still have a liver and a working heart. Never mind your army buddies' problems and treatments. This is about you. Value yourself and get treatment. If you would like an online support group, there is AskanAddict.com . But go get medical help now.

No not herion. I have a doctors appointment on tuesday.

@TheGreatShadow Good lick with the appointment.

See a doctor and do it right. There is zero shame in it being on your medical record, compared with never quitting.

Like you, I drank daily for decades and started every single day with nausea. I quit (alcohol) at age forty. In my mid 50s, I look and feel much more youthful than many my age. My father lived to age 76 after quitting alcohol in his fifties.

My only sibling and sibs by marriage have not quit. All three are currently dealing with life threatening health problems (cirrhosis, heart failure, pathologic fractures) that will likely cut their lives short. It makes the family horribly sad, but we each get to make our own choices.

@TheGreatShadow Fantastic! I hope the very best for you! The journey might be a challenging one, but the rewards at the end are more than worth it!
