From the generation which brought you such classics as
The 5 second rule
Wrap up or youll catch a cold (virus)
we now present to you the future classic
To kill germs on mucky cups just wipe em on ya jumper a bit
flawless
The 5 second rule is legit, as long as you interpret it reasonably. Of course it depends on how sticky/moist the food is and the type of surface but the longer a piece of food remains on the ground in general, the more bacteria itll pick up. Of course getting it within 5 seconds won't make the number of bacteria 0, but in general if you can grab it fast enough and it passes a visible inspection for not picking up dirt and hair, and if its a delicious high demand food item, eh. It probably won't kill you. Well it wouldnt kill me I should say. My immune system is awesome.
Avoiding cold temps to avoid colds/viruses is terrible advice though. Cold shock can increase your metabolism, immune system and enhance all sorts of automatic internal responses.

Does that take into account Murphy's Law? ex " The possibility of the bread landing buttered side down being increasingly proportionate to the price of the flooring?".
