The epitaph for Tory austerity has been written, and it’s damning

"Britain’s government has today been held up in front of the world and comprehensively damned for the misery and chaos it has inflicted on its own people. Its defining policy of austerity is revealed to the international community as callous, as ineffective, and even as un-British. These judgments do not come from some well-known foe of Theresa May and David Cameron – but from a UN envoy.

What Alston has seen is a society now visiting tremendous violence on its poorest members: those with disabilities, women in poverty, asylum seekers and children."

You're right. The Tories have chosen the easy targets, those who are politically disengaged and socially excluded. They've also cut funding so community centre's and debt and advice agencies have shut down leaving many with no choice but food banks and family support.

I watched this item on last night’s news with horror. What an indictment, not just of this government, but of successive governments going back years, as the amount of decay and deprivation highlighted did not just happen recently.....it’s been a steady decline over decades. These are the sort of people who voted for Brexit, but that will not fix their plight, only a caring type of governance can do that. I can’t see any of the present politicians capable of fixing broken Britain.....we are a country divided, just like America. We have the leavers and the remainers, and the haves and the have nots. We need visionary leaders who can bring us back together and make Britain a more equable country, I don’t see any on the horizon.

It is humiliating for those of us who do not suypport the current government, but all we can do is wait for a general election and hope and plan for better.
