they are shown respect as an individual and made to see actions have consequences violence towards a child is an abhorrent idea and will have a cumulative effect on their thought process and coping mechanisms as they get older

Clear expectations and consequences. Life is a series of choices and children need to be held accountable for their choices.

Discipline. Screaming my head off in public places was never an option when I was a kid. There has to be consequences for bad actions. It doesn't have to be physical but a timeout isn't doing it.

Then, why does it work for many others? I didn't use time outs. My child found them too upsetting. She grew up well behaved.

@Dragonfly1965 but well behaved?

Children imitate the behavior they observe.

Teach children responsibility. At a young age, I learned that my actions effect others.
I taught my little sister that. Though she is stil a brat, she takes responsibilty for her actions.
Don’t just scold children, teach them.

Because they were properly parented. Children learn good manners best, by following the example of well mannered parents. If parents show and give respect to others, then their children will too.

I do not have children so I can't speak from inside the problem, but I do know a lot of families and from outside this seems true. I generally see a lot who fail, but those who do not seem to have one thing in common, which is honesty. Honesty is the most important thing, because the people who most often fail are the ones who have a deliberate child rearing policy. Children learn mainly by imitation, and they will easily pick up any deliberate attempt to train them and realize that their parents are not being true to themselves. They will then assume that you and your teachings are insincere and will not respect you or them. Be true to yourself, explain what you do and don't like, and don't expect that your children will be just what you want them to be, they are their own people with their own minds.

This reminds me of the day that I told another woman that I told my child Santa Clause is a story and the origin. Her jaw dropped. She said something indicating, I'd done a horrible thing.

Fear and respect. Teach them to respect themselves and others and put the fear of death in their minds if they should ever do something like willingly break the law

Generally speaking it's love, honesty and education 🙂
