I'm eating grapes that are each the size of a quail egg. No way are these naturally occurring. This is some strain of genetically mutated Frankengrape. So why did I buy produce that is clearly the result of some misguided application of science playing God?
They're really good.
Disclaimer: The reference to god was used only to make a point. There is still insufficient evidence to demonstrate that any actual gods exist.
This post was completely pointless and unnecessary. I apologize for wasting your time if you've read through it this far.
As a current viticulture student at the Southern Oregon Wine Institute, I can tell you that all cultivars of domesticated grapes are hybridized varieties. Various techniques can be employed (outside of varietal selection) to improve, among other attributes, the size of the harvestable fruit. Many varieties of table grapes are know for their plumpness, however, outside of that, there are cultural practices like balanced pruning and nutritional supplements like foliage nitrogen applications that can, in combination, produce an extraordinarily large berry size at harvest. Table grapes are typically harvested as soon as they reach the desired sugar content whereas wine grapes are usually left on the vine until much of the water in the fruit has transpired out, causing the sugar concentration to spike.
Translation: Frankengrapes
Frankengrape....ha ha ha
When I was in Japan in 1995, I was served grapes the size of golf balls...they were wonderful. The price was not...
They have been produced in Kyoto since 1937 through cross-breeding...
I don't think you can name a fruit that has not been crossbred..agricultural science...not god
I can just see some scientist in my mind's eye in a dimly lit lab, hunkered over a bowl of fruit alongside vials of growth hormones derived from horse semen and cackling madly to himself about raising an army of fruit based warriors to realize his dreams of world conquest!
Be on your guard for signs of banana men and peach women.
@Sgt_Spanky at least you recognize fantasy from science...many don't and promote fear and conspiracy theories...or deny science all together..
@thinktwice Denying science is better suited for Xians. I'm better suited to deny Xianity.
Grapes have been cultivated and bred for almost 3000 years. If the number of grape bunches are reduced through pruning, the size of the individual grapes is increased. The giant grapes I had recently are a variety introduced almost 120 years ago, A variety that also grows in my yard. Since I do not prune my grapes, they are very small. The birds enjoy them very much. I don't ever get any.
Are you sure they aren't miniature plums on some kind of vine? LOL! I enjoy finding/trying new kinds of apples, the premier manipulated fruit.
