A subject that I have laboured over for a lot of my life has been the crass stupidity of people when it comes to men's welfare.
This evening I came across the following article. It includes most of the arguments that I have expressed particularly in the last 30 years regarding the ridiculous opinions many people have regarding men's welfare. Welfare that is usually none existant but erroneously believed by many to be over catered for and particularly requiring catch up and compensatory correction by services for the opposite sex. When it is fueled by those blind to the huge elephants in the room I tend to overreact.
Let me state that having been an inaugural secretary of a fairly typical Australian Men's Shed, I was not impressed by the exclusivity of membership or lack of ethics and morals - particularly when most professed to being upstanding Christians.

Allow me to quote from the article by Rhiannon J. Davies in the commonspace.scot web site:

"Those that celebrate International Men’s Day point to high suicide rates, the fact that men are more likely to be homeless, the victim of violent crime, imprisoned and die prematurely – as issues to be addressed.

According to figures published by the National Records of Scotland, in 2017 the suicide rate for males was more than three times that for females. And while the overall number of suicides went down last year, it went up marginally for men.

A report produced by NHS Health Scotland earlier this year, titled ‘Social isolation and loneliness in Scotland’, stated that: “Men, particularly those over 50, appear to be more vulnerable to social isolation than women. Scottish survey data suggest that men are less likely to report high levels of social support or frequent social contact.” And the number of men aged over 65 who currently live alone UK-wide is 911,000."

The recent release of statistics for US 2017 deaths by cause identifies suicide still in number 10 position. It also identifies that it is older men who now firm the greater number of suicides.

We all need love. As we try to drop the tough man facade, men will feel better about expressing their feelings and not feeling as they are less of a man.

genderism is a drag. to single out one sex & compare its fate with the other's will not bring relief, let alone solve any social injustice, manmade - yes, MANmade - or not. feminism doesn't work, neither does sexism or favourism. we are ONE humanity.

Totally in agreeance.

Agreed wholeheartedly. "Man is of woman born."

@Petter Are you going biblical on me? Please don't. And if you start singing "Nearer my God to thee" I'll really get upset.

@FrayedBear Heaven Forbid ?. I was thinking of McDuff, who was not of woman born, and therefore could kill McBeth without contradicting the prophesy of the 3 hags as they prattled around their cauldron.

@FrayedBear Our lord Shakespeare is a far greater guide for the masses.

@Petter Heaven forbid - shriek - you're at it again!
Remembering quotable lines of Shakespear is not my ability.

@FrayedBear What about the gaoler's soliloquy from Macbeth? He says, at the start of the second act, whilst rambling on about alcohol - "it provoketh the desire, but taketh away the performance."
A great quote!

@Petter No longer applies. Currently can't drink alcohol and even when I can I've always been a sleepy drunk not a lecherous one or if I was was never sufficiently intoxicated to prevent performance.

@FrayedBear & @Petter, so much for my naive notion of ONE humanity ?

I've had a men's shed for years - it's called my garage. Big enough for two cars, but I can't find room to squeeze in a micro-car!
My brother has one too. We often retire to it, either to make something or simply watch TV away from the women!

and not just away from the woman, but also the kids and all of the housework.

@AmmaRE007 Precisely, except that the grown-up sons are also welcome. ?

@Petter That should very much be the purpose.

Most of the many homeless around here are male from a wide variety of background and ages. I'm not sure of the 'why' however it IS a problem and it needs addressing.

Anyone unfamiliar with Men's Sheds or even just wanting to clarify purpose are recommended to read the Australian Beyond Blue suicide prevention organisation's not too distant examination of the benefits of Men's Sheds. -
