Whenever different people try different ciltures they are always ridiculed by the new age woke kinds for culture appropriation. I think this should not be the case as it takes time to adapt cultures or to get familiar with them so I support whenever different people try different cultures or dress as people in different cultures do. What's your opinion on this?

I dated a Palestinian/ Muslim man. He taught me about his beautiful culture and his people. I loved him, but his American ex-wife made it very difficult to be happy with him.

We are no longer together and it broke my heart so bad. ?

I'm so sorry. Exes are mad.

@BrokenMarrow They can be. It's all good. I have good memories of him. I will find someone someday.

@SleeplessInTexas hopefully soon

It depends on how and why its being done. Some examples of overreactions:

Some white guy really had a passion for cooking mexican food, lived down there and perfected a lot of dishes, opens a mexican restaurant and gets flack. Thats pretty lame.

People getting upset about white people with dreads, also pretty lame. All cultures and kinds of people originally had dreads you dumbasses. Thats just what happens when you don't wash your hair.

Some examples of legit complaints:
White people have constantly simultaneously mocked, demonized and stolen black music dance and fashion since the jazz age, often directly ripping off songs and making a killing off em in markets that black artists couldnt sell records in. Thats obviously some bullshit mmkay.

White pseudoliberals using buddha or ancient eastern mystic symbols as decoration to seem more culturally interesting but don't practice or know fuck all about buddhism. Not a crime or worth harassing anyone over, just a lame look.

People dressing as themed stereotypes of mexicans, native americans or heaven help you black face for halloween, costume parties or homecoming week at schoool for damn near any reason, fuck off. Surely you have more sense than that.

Lame white guys who suddenly use ebonics when trying to relate to black people: really fuckin awkward, don't do that, although a certain amount of grey area assimilation of speech pattern mimicking is instinctually natural among anyone with working mirror neurons, still don't ham it up too much, you jive ass turkey.

There are worse examples to really watch out for and there are greyer examples that are just awkwardness at worst. I think most people can judge the intent accordingly and not as many people are rioting over nonsense as grumpy old folks like to think. There are some overzealous social justice warrior exceptions but most of the woke crowd who are watchful of legitimately heinous acts of cultural disrespect know the difference and don't care about the silly shit.

People assimilate culture. My family came from Italy yet we believe George Washington was OUR first President even though my ancestors were back in Italy eating pasta and pizza when George Washington was alive.

The real issue with cultural appropriation is when it’s done in a way that disrespects the culture. It is disrespectful to wear a culture as a costume. It is disrespectful to don sacred symbols as a “fashion statement.” Or people who pretend to be part of a culture because it is “cool.” Another common issue is the implication that “I can do your culture better than you can.” Its really just a matter of respect.

@maturin1919 actually “sacred” is NOT the defining quality, since it was my comment that initially included that word. The idea is that when ANY element of culture is part of the identity and history of a particular group of people, that it’s not cool to rip it off for use as a fashion statement, or to use it in a eat that is disrespectful to the people and the origin of the symbol.

@maturin1919 does it have to be on THAT mountain? Is there a feasible way to meet that goal without disrespecting the local people and culture?

@maturin1919 if I came into your house uninvited and started touching your stuff, moving around furniture, throwing some things out because you really shouldn’t be eating/drinking/watching/ playing that, how would you feel? If I started trying on your clothes and took your favorite hoodie that you’ve had forever and put it on and decided, this would be better without the hood, I’ll just cut that off? Would you be like “hey, thanks for helping me live my best life”? Or would you be like “get the f$&@ out of my house and stop touching my sh!t”?
When you go into someone else’s space, physical or otherwise, you treat it with respect. You don’t tell them what to do with their stuff and you don’t take things without asking. And while there is no specific individual to ask about, say your example, an Afro, you can ask yourself and others if that is appropriate. If, for example, you choose an Afro to present yourself as part of that group when you aren’t, to get “cred” or as a performance, it’s not cool.

@maturin1919 absolutely right. You are totally entitled to be an ignorant jerk.

I think the whining about "cultural appropriation" is just so much bullshit.
"Culture" and "heritage" are simply tribal concepts meant to keep people divided, and I have no use for any of them.
Whenever I hear anyone complaining about someone else "appropriating" or otherwise attempting to engage in another culture, I want to punch them in the throat for being a whiny asshole.
Whenever I hear anyone complaining about their "heritage" not being respected, I want to punch them as well, for the same reason.
Fuck being "woke". That's just more bullshit.

Except when it's not.

My guess is that yours is the dominant culture. Because it’s easy to diminish the culture of others when yours is considered the default.
If the larger society told you that your language, dress, beliefs and worldview are something you should “stop making such a big deal about,” you might feel differently.

@PalacinkyPDX Wow, way to jump to a false conclusion. I said nothing about indigenous cultures that were conquered. I'm talking about whiny white people, claiming that their so "woke", and ragging on someone for eating a particular type of ethnic food, or wearing their hair in some sort style. Or some idiot missionary getting himself killed for trying to bring Jesus to a bunch of people who had no interest.
Everyone has gone through something. I'm not really hearing those who have been oppressed being the ones doing all the complaining.
Check yourself.

@A2Jennifer Your "guess" is incorrect. I don't have a "culture".

@PalacinkyPDX Yeah, I really do not care. That is the truth. I'm tired of everyone whining and complaining about how badly they've been treated.
I'm tired of everyone complaining about how unfair life is.
You can get as angry with me as you please. I don't care about that either.
As long as I'm not being an asshole to any individual person, it doesn't matter what anyone thinks about how I feel about anything.

@PalacinkyPDX Helluva comeback. Well done.

@KKGator everyone has a culture. And like an accent, if you think you don’t have one it’s becaude everyone around you has the same one - thus, the dominant culture.
