So. Does any one other than me have to look up the spelling of a word on Google, or whatever, just to seem to not be intellectually refrained.

I will admit that even though that I have a farther grasp on the English language that some that I retort to.
But (as I do as well, there are always Typo's).
Some don't seem to care, or do not care to illustrate the English language to any normality.
I find that to be a lax in the status quo of the educational system as it is.

There comes a time, or many that I would like to admit that I too have to consult to Google, or others as for both spelling, and, meaning of a word.

Sorry for the rant, But I just wanted to express my disdain of the butchering of the English language, even though I've done so myself.

From the the great James Earl Jones. He quoted. " We as human beings are gifted in that we have the pleasure of exploring that to it's full potential".
That statement has always held a sort of resonance with me.
JMHO.

If I missspell [sic] a word when typing a comment or post on this website, the word is highlighted in #FFD9D9 (hex color). I usually notice the highlighting and if I'm not sure how to spell the word, yes, I'll look it up.

I'm dyslexic and have brain damage. Sometimes I spell a word so badly even google doesn't know wtf I'm talking about.

Short answer: yes.
Explanation: I really DO make every effort to be to be as accurate as possible, first so I don't get misread, and secondly, so I don't sound like a goof in a discussion ?

I have other reasons as well, but yes to all which you have noted.
I find that I am harder on myself than the critique of others,

@TristanNuvo

Yes, as I am also. So I completely understand.

1- the purpose of language is to communicate a thought. If the thought is given by one and received by another, the job is complete.
2- i grew up pre-internet and consulted books made from paper if i was uncertain of a word's spelling or definition as well as if i required a synonym. It seems that in this world full of technology where i can literally type a word phoenetically into a search engine and retrieve spelling, meanings, and synonyms, it's irrational that as a whole, socital communication skills have declined.
3- i too make mistakes. I am hardly an expert, and frequently errors occur from my haste in submission, or lack of proofreading.

In short. Yes. In response to all your words, yes!

I am no grammar Nazi, but I do insist that people who expect me to read their posts have enough respect for me to make their prose reasonably comprehensible, coherent and concise, and then to interact in an intellectually honest and epistemologically humble way.

All of the time, especially when I am doing this at two o'clock in the morning and my brain is a little fuzzy. Until l joined this site, I had not written much in decades. In that regard, it has been good for me to have to figure out theof spelling some words. If l can't, l Google.

Any living language will evolve. "Linguistic drift". There is no correct English language tho there be correct English grammar. Other wise English would not absorb other languages, slang, colloquialisms, sounds etc. Butchering the language is the evolving of the language. Very irritating. "true 'dat"?

It is best if the evolution is slow, though.

@Coffeo I find it frustrating & irritating. But it is a fact & I have to work with the facts. Groovy.

@Countrywoman The French have been bothered by creeping language changes for ages. The Académie française was established in 1635 as an official language authority. The Académie has tried to prevent the Anglicization of the French language. For example, the Académie has recommended to avoid loanwords from modern English (such as walkman, computer, software and e-mail), in favor of newly coined French words (baladeur, ordinateur, logiciel, and courriel respectively). They are fighting a rearguard action, I think.

The internet screwed up my spelling. People misspell things just so closely to appear plausible, that for me can rub off.
Apparently I've trouble spelling diarrhea and some other ones that escape me at the moment.

Back in college a girlfriend and I would spend ridiculous amounts of time on the phone discussing spelling and grammar in a way that bordered on "grammar porn". It was a BIG DEAL. ?
Funny that when we would turn in writing assignments I would be the one to make the A, but she went on to get her masters, later showing me parts of dissertations that hurt my head. By comparison I was a very "Betty Crocker" writer, dry like beef jerky, her bits would take you on a journey down a beautiful primrose path to nowhere. LOL I guess mine were just easier to grade - shrugs.

FF some years I became mother to a girl with dyslexic tendencies, and while she can write perspectives that would have put her aspiring writer of a Dad under the table her RL pronounciations & spelling aren't always on point (oops I misspelled something right there) .
This situation has cut the guts out of my grammar nazi tendencies.

But yes, in the feels, I've got to check the googoo once in awhile. Spelling is the least of my worries however, since I'm horribly ADD at times and a pathological skimmer have to check that I've read something correctly & watch that I'm not repeating myself.

I do the same. I deal with ADD myself.
It's strange, it's not only about writing, but reading as well.
I've found myself re-reading the same sentence over and over, and it takes a while to realize that I'm doing it.

Or, maybe I'm just getting old. lol. 🙂

I wanna participate in grammar porn! ??? (one of my favorite people just told me he likes practicing words with me. I have to admit, it made my heart beat faster.)

@Lillyfield41 Oh it used to be soooo much fun. Hard to believe i ever loved writing, tho never fancied myself a writer. I used to sleep with a dictionary on my bed for years pre-domesticity ?

Punctuation is destroyed. Used to have a favorite bit of grammar I forgot the name of...sigh

I still collect words sometimes, and phrases always for if my boy is ever bred, for a registered name, and barring that to share with dear friends should it never come to pass. Fun plays on words.
Still come up with a great neologism now & then, often borne of my inability to recall a word I'm trying to pull up.
🙂

I do it quite often but then I don't come from an English speaking background.

That I do understand.
A good portion of my family is in Florence Italy.
Some of them speak "Broken" English, And I the same with Italian, so I use quite often a translator, that is such a great tool.

@TristanNuvo It certainly is and it is so easy to find the meaning of words. I read a lot and every time there is a word I do not understand, I look it up. I think my vocabulary has increased immensely doing that.

Give me 7 cups of coffee then I will read this again.

I am a spelling nerd. One I see a lot is, well, alot. A lot is not one word, and lots of folks spell the plural form of a word, with an apostrophe 's'. Like Monday's. The plural is Mondays. Apostrophe 's' indicates ownership.
