Personally, I alwasy lift the seat up before and put it back down after. It is a habit I developed when I was a kid. I was a bit clumsy as a child and it seemed if I ever dropped anything in the bathroom, it would 9 times out of 10 bounce it way into the toilet. So, I just started puttign down the seat teh the toilet lid every time, and still do to this day. Even if I am no longer clumsy anymore.
