Social conservatives like to make the argument that being gay is a choice. Well it's not a choice and there's hard science to prove it. That being said, I have to pose this question: why would it matter even if it WAS a choice? I have to question rightwingers' motivation on this one. Because by 'choice' they are implying that one of the choices is the wrong choice which is bullshit.

I really hate cauliflower, seriously I do, that is not a choice it is reality. Excuse if this is considered out of line, but some guys like big butts, I don't, I am a boob and eyes man. I didn't choose to be like this, it is just my natural preference. My gay female friends are not interested in the male body, I can relate to that. So, it is clear that we like or dislike or are attracted to or repulsed by many things and it is not a choice. The question of what if it were a choice is hard for me, because I can't see how it could be, but I guess if it was, so be it. I don't think I could have chosen to dislike cauliflower or big butts, then I could choose not to like coffee or chocolate, hell no.

What really amazes me in this age is that it is even an issue. I am a straight guy, my son is a straight guy (I think) and at the moment we have 2 gay girls staying with us. Many of our friends, both male and female are gay so it only becomes a topic of discussion in response to one of our bigoted politicians saying something stupid. A persons sexuality is unimportant, if a person is fixing my car, as long as they do it right, nothing else matters. I think society in general accepts people as they are, just small pockets here and there that need a good dose of reality, or a smack in the mouth- if they are politicians.

But pollies deserve a smack in the mouth just on principle. In relation to which I greeted my brother in the traditional way ""Ow ya goin"" to which he replied "Better than Barnaby". I intend to make it a national reply.

I am not a rightwinger and I think is a choice. Unless you can show me the "gay gene". I am not going to say I am right or correct. I will admit since is not of my preference I am not going to ponder much studying if is a choice or not. You can say that since I could walk I was lifting skirts and looking under them and Funny... my son was a skirt lifter also since age one. I am not going to waste my time in the choice or no choice dilemma. It was Never my Dilemma.

So you think as a small boy you made the choice to like girls?

I've never heard of a "straight gene" either. It was never a choice for me as far back as I can remember neither boys nor girls have ever been appealing.

I'm not sure why it would matter to anyone. We honor all kinds of choices as valid without question. Nowadays, religious opinions are more valid to the people writing and enforcing laws than the actual laws.

@PhoebeCat I Sure Did. I found Girls Very Appealing. Very Proud of My Choice Too. If You Don't Make a Choice.... You Can't Play in the Playground!!!!

@GipsyOfNewSpain
I'm happy you're enjoying yourself.

I'm glad to be nowhere near the playground myself.

@PhoebeCat Is not for me to honor all choices as valid without question. I am not sorry to disagree with your take on such delicate matter.

I always wonder when they made the choice to be straight. You'll sometimes hear preachers talk about the great temptation of the gay lifestyle. Really? I'm straight and never thought to myself that it would be so great to have other men's penises in my life. Whenever a preacher makes this argument, I realize that he's saying it because he's gay, and maybe he refrains from that strong temptation (i.e., his innate nature), but he's self-loathing and in denial and assumes everyone feels the way he does.

I get so disgusted when the religious nuts make this remark about the gays “those people are living in sin and if they don’t reform their ways they’re going to hell”. I always reply “ they’re going to the same place you are as neither heaven nor hell exist”. I always tell them it’s a genetic problem not a choice and even if it was a choice, so what, to each his own. I have a gay cousin who used to come visit me and he would pester me to come see him. I told him I will come see you but I’m definitely not going to sleep with you. He just laughs and I did go see him and had a great time.

I'm always amused by this as it a) implies it certainly was a choice FOR THEM and b) leads to the obvious reply that religion shouldn't be respected as that's a choice too.

Oddly enough the god botherer types that use this argument do not like when I point out their flavor of jeebus is a choice too.

Because if it isn't a choice, that would mean that, in their eyes, God made a mistake.

That always makes even less sense to me. Assuming God is omnicient and omnipotent and all that jazz then making them gay would be deliberate, and furthermore trying to be gay if God meant otherwise would be impossible.

So...if being gay is a choice (dear religious homophobes) then is it that it's easy to defy God or is God less concerned about Teh Gay(tm) than you are? Because I seem to remember something about not judging others...

Every human has the right of choice regarding ANYTHING as long as it harms no one or denies another their freedoms and right of choice.

It may stem from their insecurity in all things different. But it is strange so many of them keep being caught with someone else's dick in their hands.

Or mouth!
