Well, NO bullshit here at all, yesterday during my fortnightly sojourn to get groceries I happened upon a woman in great distress because her young daughter, about 4-5 years of age, was having an Epileptic turn on the footpath in front of the Supermarket.
Gathered around were a somewhat large group of numerous 'lolly-gaggers' ( spectators) doing nothing what-so-ever but staring and 2 Mormon Elders who were trying to tell them mother than they would PRAY for her child.
Having been a nurse for many years as well as growing up with a younger sister who suffered from epilepsy I shouted for someone to ring for an ambulance, another to get me a spoon to use to wedge between the child's teeth and tongue ( to prevent the spasms causing the tongue to bitten btw, NOT swallowed as people wrongly think) whilst I put the child in the recovery position, checked her pulse and respirations.
Once the spasms had subsided and the child had resumed breathing normally I turned to comfort the mother, the Mormons pushed their way in and proclaimed loudly, " See, God answered our prayers and sent this man to help the child."
I simply responded to them, " I am an Atheist, a retired Nurse, I grew up with a younger sister who had epilepsy and know exactly what to do in cases such as this, NOW, take you inane mumbo jumbo, put it where it really belongs AND should something like occur in front of you ever again CALL an Ambulance which is far more effective and useful than your ridiculous praying."
The ambulance arrived, the paramedics checked out the child and recommended that she be transported to hospital for further checks, the Mormons left with their heads hung down, in shame I hope, as did the numerous other lolly-gaggers, and after receiving a massive hug and copious thanks from the mother I went on my way to do my grocery shopping.
It truly sickens me to the core that there are, a) those who find sick 'entertainment' in the distress and suffering of others, and, b) that there are the religious zealots who will, so it seems, grab at ANY opportunity at all to promote their beliefs, etc.
Just a little up-date to my posting, Shara's mother rang me not 5 minutes ago. Shara is still in hospital whilst they work on stabilising her medication regime, a very wise and forward thinking doctor has also prescribed medical marijuana extract in a capsule form for Shara.
Shara remembers little from the seizure, only to be expected, but remembers seeing "lots of strange flashing colours" before it happened and " a big kind man with no hair who held her hand and told her that everything would be better soon."
I'll be heading for the shower in about 3/4 of an hour as Shara has asked for the "man with no hair" to come and see her because she wants to give him lots and lots of big hugs ( who could refuse such a request?).
Shara's Mum will be collecting me from home at about 10am.
Sadly, I would have been one of those spectators. Other than calling an ambulance, I would not have known how to respond in such a situation. I certainly could not have walked away, if only just to be present in case I could help in any way. I commend you on your knowledge & quick action,
Thank you for helping.
I hope that child soon has access to medical marijuana and she and her family can live free of these seizures.
I wish I could reach through the internet and hug you...what a fantastic story of real caring, not bullshit crap caring ..."thoughts and prayers" did not help that child...HUG!
