I comment as someone outside the US give an international perspective. In Australia and England conservative evangelicals are also predominantly white, anglo-saxons, and well heeled. Increasingly, they are conflating their religious views with the right wing of politics. The result is that they don't care about greed, but they panic about the West's moral collapse as they see it. Gay marriage is, for them, a 'cause-celebre' and they fight it as though this is the most important issue they've ever faced.
All this is one of the causes of my own increasing doubts about theism and Christian belief in particular.
I find it sickening.

And I saw today (maybe old article) that in another kiss to the right wing christian extremists (evangelicals) the funding has been suspended for essential portions of the research on cure for HIV. The mice they use to test the potential fixes on are "modified" with fetal cells so of course that is a big NO for the RWCE and the loss of funding means no more mice. The radical christian extremists in the country will happily watch millions of Americans die (other diseases are also being explored with the use of these mice) in order to thwart abortion. Of course, they are willing to just shoot people as well but I think they regret the part where they might have to go to prison for that. Next step will be to make it a violation of their "religious freedom" to punish them for "striking down the sinners".

Of course. They’re opposed to giving rights to anyone their storybook condemns. Really “pro-life” as well.
