I sometimes feel the same, I love my work but hate the pressure that sometimes comes with it and the daily sameness sometimes. Yet one thing you have to understand is that sometimes you can end up earning more money by taking it easy and not trying too hard, than you do when pedaling like mad, in part because you do a better job of what remains.

It really is hugely over-rated, and outdated too: it's clear that due to automation there aren't enough jobs to go round and as artificial intelligence takes over more and more tasks there'll be even fewer - so it makes sense to free up all the remaining jobs for those who define their worth in terms of the job they do so that they can be happy while all those of us who would be far happier not working and doing creative stuff live on a basic income paid for by a tax on robots.

(Two notes... Firstly, it will soon become apparent that most of the people who write for The Idler already have quite a lot to feel content about. Few, if any, have ever wondered if they should spend the last five quid from their giro on food for the kids or a token for the pre-paid electricity meter. Secondly, for the benefit of our American friends here, in Britain a public school is a private school, which rich people and social climbers pay to indoctrinate... er, I mean, educate their children away from the influence of common oiks. This may seem odd, but there's a very good reason we call it that. The reason we maintain this system is it prevents common oik kids, who generally turn into perfectly reasonable adults, turning into the next generation of David Camerons, Boris Johnsons, George Osbornes and Jacob Rees-Moggs. Believe me, I know: I went to public school.)

(A third note... if any non-Brits are unaware of who David Cameron, Boris Johnson, George Osborne and Jacob Rees-Mogg are, they're best summed up as "a physical representation of everything that is wrong with Britain".)

A friend once told me that there are four ways to get rich:

1. Marry someone who is rich but there is a curse that usually comes with it, the man or woman.
2. Rob a bank but then you have to obey the 11th commandment, don't get caught.
3. Because a famous musician, writer or inventor.
4. Do something so different that the government pay you to go away.

Buy a RV, get on the road and join the nomadic revolution.

I guess I am lucky... I love my job so it isn't really working to me. I could retire if I wanted... But I wouldn't be able to spend money like I do now. I like not having to worry about things.
