Have you or someone you know taken statins? I am shocked to have just received a message from my doctor telling me I should consider taking them. He also said I have a 1.4% risk, but I'm not sure of what (heart attack? stroke?) I'm asking for clarification, but I'd like to get people's thoughts. I don't know anything about them. I don't like the idea of taking meds if I don't have to. I didn't think my cholesterol was that high.

I'm confused, but all this, but from what my blood test last month says, my HDL Cholesterol was 54 (reference range is >46), and my LDL Cholesterol was 74 (reference range is < 130.

Thoughts? I'm sure I'll find out more soon.

The doctor wanted to start my husband (now my ex) on statins but I'd read about some serious side effects. He went back to the doctor and said he didn't want to take to them. The doc gave him some suppliments to take instead. If you don't want to take the statins your doc might have an alternative if you ask.

@orange_girl docs know better and mindlessly ignore our protests they are prescribing these deadly low dose poisons....just like AGENT ORANGE was branded safe in Vietnam....200 thousand veterans have died because of dioxin NOT VIETcong weapons

p.s. if you don't know what your doctor meant, it's your doctor who can tell you what he meant. we don't know him.

@orange_girl believe me, i don't anymore! but then again, it was the combination with the other med that caused the problem.

Talk to the doctor for sure. And then look at your diet and exercise. Those can help immensly.

I was on them for several years, but stopped taking them because they are implicated in causing dementia, and Alzheimer’s runs in my family anyway.

What was your total cholesterol? The HDL and LDL are within normal limits. Just knowing that, and the low risk of cardiovascular disease(which includes heart attack and stroke).
If I were you, I’d hold off. I take a statin but my numbers are high, and I also am diabetic and have angina. I think for me, it’s worth taking.

@orange_girl that’s great, all your numbers. My total is almost 400, despite me having gastroparesis and living off jello and sprite.

My advice is get a different doctor. Statin drugs may have serious side effects. The risk of taking statin drugs is only clearly justified for middle-aged men who have already have had a heart attack. "No female should ever take a statin drug to lower cholesterol for primary prevention of heart disease. They don’t work for women. Women who take Lipitor or any other statin drug to lower cholesterol do not live any longer than women who don’t take the drug. There is no benefit in terms of prolonging your life for women. Don't take statins....change your diet and protect your brain from Alzheimer's caused by statins...good for blood thinning but deadly for brain fats necessary for life

This is very true! We saw it first hand in my father!
