I just read that GMO rice is being banned in China...but not in the USA ...via the FDA.

Some of you have said that the anti GMO and Anti Vax people are unscientific. That is not so. I understand your saying this because there is much propaganda against it and their scientific findings are suppressed. But it is very scientific. Lots of research. Lots of findings. It is not like a religion based on blind faith as one of you said. Stephen Frantz, who I happen to know, is a dedicated scientist. It's okay that your opinion differs from mine, only it breaks my heart because lots of benefits are missed.

California is the place to be 🙂 I can grow all of my own food year-round here using local starters and seeds that have been here for centuries, untouched by industry. I like to be the only one touching my food, period. I don’t profess to know how good or bad GMO actually is. I think it is all convoluted info right now so I like to keep it simple, eat as clean and unprocessed as possible, and keep learning as much as I can about nutrition.

Are your seeds Non GMO? Love what you do. That takes a lot of work and dedication. Why don't you check out Stephen Frantz' time line on FB? Lots of info for you. Most info is manipulated by Monsanto.

Rice is deadly anyway - like eating sugar. Now GMO rice, that's just great!

Once again I suggest going to face book and checking out the time line for STEPHEN FRANTZ. He is a scientist who has devoted himself to researching Monsanto's GMO's and has involved himself in taking action.

The damaging effects of GMO's is often in its usage. Countless products are contaminated with glyphosates because the plants are modified to be resistant to Roundup weed killer.

I'm way more concerned about the toxic levels of arsenic in most rice.

Yes. Arsenic in rice. And that's bad, too. I read that Lundberg Co. attempts to keep it at a minimum and that they continuously test their rice.

I prefer to eat non GMO. I don't think the safety has really been established yet. I try to buy local grown or grow my own, and I eat organic when I can. I avoid stuff from China when at all possible. Their frankenfoods make ours look tame.

What gmo foodstuffs are the Chinese putting out @HippieChick58?

You seem to hold a lot of misinformation on the topic.

Organic is a marketing movement, not a scientifically based beneficial idea. Their claims about GMO (that you seem to believe) are untrue.

GMO is probably the safest way we've ever added traits to our domesticated species. It is the one case where we know exactly what is being changed and resultant product is really safety tested.

GMO is really a non sense label. Everything you've ever eaten (besides the accidental insect now and then) is GMO in every sense that matters. We've been collecting completely random and unknown mutations in our food supplies for 1000s of years. Sometimes this has resulted in disaster, see the case of the Lenape potato for one example. Everything you fear in "GMO" products has a much greater risk of occurring in crops produced through traditional techniques.

One more time, everything you eat is GMO. Adding a gene manually is just one new way of doing the job. It is also probably the safest method in actual fact.

The movement to ban GMOs is utterly unscientific. Much like the anti-vaccination campaign, the anti-GMO effort behaves like a religion, as it involves accepting a proposition without a shred of scientific evidence and whips people into a hysteria, resulting in unsound policies and decisions.

@Akfishlady I understand what you're saying, and agree that DDT was not well understood when it was introduced--neither was radioactivity. But the answer to poor or inadequate science is better and more of it. We now have mountains of analysis and studies into genetically modified organisms, and nothing has been found that would cause us to halt. In some parts of the world, GMOs may be the only option to avoid famine. A compromise might be better labelling, identifying GMOs in supermarkets, giving people a choice; but to ban them outright, without a single shred of evidence? Highly reactionary and irrational.

@Akfishlady Exactly. Have the long hard yards gained from years of testing yet occurred to enable trust in the safety of these GMO products? Look at the lies told over tobacco additives, pharmaceuticals such as thalidomide, vioxx, chemicals such as agent orange ... the list goes on.

Japan is one of the countries that have banned current GMO's because a new protein, not found in nature, appeared in GMO products that cause some deaths and bad side effects. Problem is worse because once these new strains are created, even though they are not expected and are very bad, they cannot be gotten rid of. They are with us forever.

Many people believe this is good science. We really don't know what the true science is behind Monsanto's creations because they suppress findings that do not back them up. It isn't honest. Perhaps it would be a good idea to scout out these suppressed findings and to keep an open mind.

Bottom line is YOU, your health now and down the road in the future. It's not a question of proving a point. It is a question of what is good for you - for your precious life Then we don't want to whole world to go the way of Paraguay whose green fertile lands were destroyed by Monsanto.

At least, the jury should be out.

@think-beyond The beauty of science, unlike religion, is that the jury, so to speak, is always out, as there's always opportunity to gain more knowledge. Religion is doctrinaire and incapable of change. The anti-GMO crowd, much like the anti-vax'ers, behave much like a religion, in that they start from a non-evidence based position, and spread their memes using anecdotes and fear. I would appreciate a qualified source on the deaths and side affects, as I was unable to locate this story. And please know that, while my mind is not closed on the topic of GMOs, testing and studies performed to date, not by paid mouthpieces of Monsanto, but by independent labs, has not found any cause for alarm. In other words, I remain agnostic on the subject; isn't that the most logical position for us all?

@think-beyond have a cite for "Japan is one of the countries that have banned current GMO's because a new protein, not found in nature, appeared in GMO products that cause some deaths and bad side effects. "

  1. GMOs are not banned in Japan so far as I know. In fact, they have a robust regulatory process that checks them out and approves them on a regular basis.
  2. What protein is this?
  3. What deaths? I can find nothing about this.

These are really basic facts to have so substantially wrong.

1

I don't know why we buy anything from China anymore. Too much toxic stuff. I also don't know why they let countries like ours and others send our toxic biproducts to them. I know it all has to do with money. At some point we all need to understand were all losing at some level

And we are eating this stuff right here in the USA...produced here...marketed here...approved of here. Hospitals lookout! Here we come!

So that's not a contradiction at all. (I need a meme for this).

I also just read where the Chinese Navy is becoming an awesome force. America is fast becoming a second tier nation and Trump is gunning for third.
