The attack on Jussie Smollett seems...sketchy. I hate to say I have questions. He was attacked on Lower Water Street in Chicago. This is part of the system of multilevel streets. There are a lot of high-end hotels in the area with their loading docks and waste disposal at the lower level. He was right by the plazas of the Chicago Tribune, NBC Tower, the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business, and a super high-end Apple Store up at street level.
Cabs and savvy drivers use the lower streets to get around fast. While there are usually a lot of homeless people sleeping down there, it's not much for pedestrian traffic and people don't mill around down there. There are probably also a zillion cameras.
What else bothers me---The attackers had rope and bleach. At 2am. Just walking around Lower Water Street. And supposedly they yelled "This is MAGA country" during the attack. Delusional thinking in one of the Bluest cities in America.
The more I think about it, I'm wondering WHY was he down there in the first place? You have to take stairs down there and then climb back up. Pedestrians use the street above!
I really do hate to say I think something seems odd. Last news report I read there was maybe some security footage. We'll see.
Whatever happened remains to be seen. When I listened to NPR, things struck me as being "off". I had the same feeling when Susan Smith first told her story (the woman who murdered her children by drowning them in her car years ago). I hope it get resolved and that he's ok.
From what I've heard, he does seem to be OK. He walked himself to Northwestern Hospital which is in that area, couple blocks. And he clearly knew where he was well enough to get there through the feature-less maze of lower-level streets. I'll be checking the updates from the Sun-Times and WGN today. Friends back home also think something here's not quite right.
