"I would love to believe that when I die I will live again, that some thinking, feeling, remembering part of me will continue. But as much as I want to believe that, and despite the ancient and worldwide cultural traditions that assert an afterlife, I know of nothing to suggest that it is more than wishful thinking. The world is so exquisite, with so much love and moral depth, that there is no reason to deceive ourselves with pretty stories for which there's little good evidence. Far better, it seems to me, in our vulnerability, is to look Death in the eye and to be grateful every day for the brief but magnificent opportunity that life provides."

I believe in science. And the only thing spiritual that science can even vaguely support is the possibility of continued energy, which means we move on as cosmic dust and possibly into another form, but in no way can our brain conscience move along with us. Or, the energy is expended on the bacteria that munch on our bodies.

I know quite a few much better educated people than I who believe in an afterlife but to me it is quite simple. Our personality, memories, thoughts etc reside in the brain and when it dies and decays they are gone forever. How do the think they carry on, on a floppy disc, a CD, a memory stick ?.

"pretty stories for which there's little good evidence". Far be it from me to be in any way critical about anything coming from one of my favorite humans but In my opinion, as far as I can tell there is NO evidence, little or otherwise.

I think a big part of being a rationalist is having the ability to accept reality no matter how much you might wish it weren't true. Accept it, and figure out how you're going to handle it.
