Why do some British people not like Donald Trump?
To follow up yesterday's post about why people are so hostile to Trump, here is a piece that provides the British perspective for why they do not like Trump. I think you will like the way Nate White describes how they feel.

Think piece from England: WHY Brits do not like Trump.
Someone on Quora asked "Why do some British people not like Donald Trump?" Nate White, an articulate and witty writer from England wrote this magnificent response:

"A few things spring to mind.

Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem.

For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace - all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed. So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump’s limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief.

Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing - not once, ever.

I don’t say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British sensibility - for us, to lack humour is almost inhuman.

But with Trump, it’s a fact. He doesn’t even seem to understand what a joke is - his idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty.

Trump is a troll. And like all trolls, he is never funny and he never laughs; he only crows or jeers. And scarily, he doesn’t just talk in crude, witless insults - he actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness. There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth. It’s all surface.

Some Americans might see this as refreshingly upfront. Well, we don’t. We see it as having no inner world, no soul. And in Britain we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are plucky underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist.

Trump is neither plucky, nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite of that.

He’s not even a spoiled rich-boy, or a greedy fat-cat.
He’s more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege.

And worse, he is that most unforgivable of all things to the British: a bully. That is, except when he is among bullies; then he suddenly transforms into a snivelling sidekick instead.

There are unspoken rules to this stuff - the Queensberry rules of basic decency - and he breaks them all. He punches downwards - which a gentleman should, would, could never do - and every blow he aims is below the belt. He particularly likes to kick the vulnerable or voiceless - and he kicks them when they are down.

So the fact that a significant minority - perhaps a third - of Americans look at what he does, listen to what he says, and then think 'Yeah, he seems like my kind of guy’ is a matter of some confusion and no little distress to British people, given that:

  • Americans are supposed to be nicer than us, and mostly are.
  • You don't need a particularly keen eye for detail to spot a few flaws in the man.

This last point is what especially confuses and dismays British people, and many other people too; his faults seem pretty bloody hard to miss. After all, it’s impossible to read a single tweet, or hear him speak a sentence or two, without staring deep into the abyss. He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of shit. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum.

God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid.

He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart.
In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws - he would make a Trump.

And a remorseful Doctor Frankenstein would clutch out big clumpfuls of hair and scream in anguish: 'My God… what… have… I… created?

If being a twat was a TV show, Trump would be the boxed set."

Once we travel out of our own country, we get a worldview that American propaganda does not allow its citizens to obtain. Nate White is succinct, unerring, and profound. His opinion is spot on. And that doesn't even cover the milking drumpf and his dynasty perpetrate on the American people. Many wish for the execution of this blatant traitor and his underlings. Mr. White's article is much appreciated.

The world knows. They know our leaders are temporary. They are waiting for him to leave. Let's not dissapoint.

That's why you are wise in the US we have to wait five years.

@Fernapple Yeah, we are really wise. WE elected this inept ass clown.

@Sticks48 He wouldn't have been elected if it weren't for the anouncment of more of Hilleries emails

@Besalbub And an outdated and ridiculous electoral system.

As a Brit: Yes. This.

It’s not just some, most, I believe.

And no, to the earlier commenter, what a daft comment, we were not told to hate him ; he is wholly hateful and despicable, we don’t need any encouragement to see that clearly.

Mind you, we hold some of our own current political leaders in despite also.

That’s a trumper without the ability to think for himself and doesn’t believe we can either. His only source of info is Fox News... which is more propaganda than news.

I agree, he is loathesome, rude and creepy...he gives the 'Jimmy Savilles' (You know that feel when you know yer mate's Dad is a bit of a creep when you go to their house?). No money, would be worth his hateful presence. He's also racist, sexist and disablist. However, you are correct...looks at Jacob Rees Mogg and Boris Johnson. That these creeps ever got wife's let alone, mistresses is beyond me. I weep for the future.

It’s not just the U.K. I was reading on quora how much fun they make of 45 in China. He is hated in Canada.
I remember the last time Obama appeared in the Canadian parliament before the election. I assure you trumpski will Never get this kind of welcome.

I just hope that the rest of the world realizes that it is Trump who is the problem and not the American people in general. We have more deplorables in this country than I thought, but they are far from the majority and they will not be allowed to drag our country down.

3

... and then add for us Americans that he is dragging our country through the mud and selling it to the highest bidder.

I like how this writer focuses on the personality/character flaws of Trump to show why he is not likeable without even going into his political actions and policies. On that alone he should not have been electable. Yesterday's post addressed the problems with Trump's statements, policies and actions as well as some of his character flaws (e.g. lying). Together they paint a vivid picture of why this man is despicable and never should have come close to being president.

@ATDayHiker
I was struck by the same thing. Policies and corruption aside, how could anyone think this person should be president?

Unfortunately, I know the answer, and it's way too close to home for me. My sister and her husband have ONE issue: abortion. They will never vote for a Democrat as long as the platform is pro choice. They will help elect a repulsive pig like Trump in order to defeat a Democrat.

I suspect many in his base are the same with several issues, like letting too many brown people into the country, prayer in school, or gun control (my brother). They don't care about anything else, and they don't see what a con man Trump is on their issues.

He doesn't give a flying fig about anything unless he thinks it makes him money, or makes him look good.

Stepping down now from my soapbox. ?

@GinaKay I have a brother and sister-in-law who are the same way, so I sympathize with you. Logic and reason are useless when dealing with the deplorables.

@ATDayHiker
Yes. ?

"A Jabba the Hut of privilege."
"...a Shakespeare of shit."
"He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart."

We love the Brits!

I always found their wit to be stellar...they can fling insults that almost sound poetic...obviously too "high" brow for our low brow pres

@TheAstroChuck Thank you

So it seems Nate does not like him then.
