I'm just wondering why all you atheists celebrate Valentine's Day? Isn't it a Christian fairy tale day? I want someone to ask me out on a date but not because hallmark needed a reason to sell cards in February. I would rather go out with someone genuinely interested in my fabulous brain. With that being said, I'm available tonight... lol

We really don't celibate anything officially so we take advantage of any opportunity to have fun.. i personally don't even care but enjoy it big time when i see people happy and in love.. my favorite holiday though is Halloween ?

Why do xtians celebrate Yule? The bible specifically says not to. December 25 is Mithra's birthday, not Jesus's.

I'm a Valentine's day kind of gal... while I absolutely appreciate thoughtful romantic gestures throughout the year write Valentine's day off as a hallmark day with me and I'll take it as a sign you're trying to get me to "fire" you.

I"ve been lucky having never ever been in anything serious where this day wasn't taken note of mutually and hope to keep it that way.
Life is too fucking short to pass up an opportunity to celebrate love, especially on Valentine's Day.

Well it is hard to send a card without an address. Actually it is not hard to send, just hard to receive.

I have nothing against people who celebrate Valentines Day, but I don’t. If you love the person you’re with, you need to show it more than one day a year.
It’s a contrived Hallmark holiday, IMO.

I love Valentine’s Day, sorry - not sorry, lol! Ever since I was a kid, it’s just a day where time is taken to slow down and spread love. As a teacher for 18 years, I get letters every year from students telling me all the reasons why they love me, along with some chocolates and the occasional red rose. ?? I refuse to be cynical about the annual reminder to celebrate love in a world where we spread so much hate and misery. I bought my mom flowers and took her to the movies, and it was a reminder to myself that I don’t do enough for her.

P.S. got this from a student the other day, as a nerdy science teacher how could I not love it! ?

The overwhelming majority of people here in the US have no clue about the origin of Valentines day. Its just a long standing cultural tradition like Christmas. The iconography of both of them were established by commercial interests.

All those saints were real people, not fairy tales.

Real people...just people.

I don't think we celebrate Valentine's Day as a Christian holiday any more than we do Christmas. Both do coincide with pagan holidays as a deliberate attempt to coopt people to their religions. To me, however, they are both about celebrating love. Candy and presents aren't bad, either.

What's a "date"?

Also; I don't see any mention of a celebration of Valentine's day in today's posts . . . Except . . .
