Thermodynamics Of Hell

A thermodynamics professor had written a take home exam for his graduate students. It had one question:

“Is hell exothermic or endothermic? Support your answer with a proof.”
Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle’s Law or some variant. One student, however wrote the following:

First, we postulate that if souls exist, then they must have some mass. If they do, then a mole of souls can also have a mass. So, at what rate are souls moving into hell and at what rate are souls leaving? I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving.

As for souls entering hell, lets look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Some of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to hell. Since, there are more than one of these religions and people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all people and all souls go to hell.

With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in hell to increase exponentially.

Now, we look at the rate of change in volume in hell. Boyle’s Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in hell to stay the same, the ratio of the mass of souls and volume needs to stay constant.

So, if hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter hell, then the temperature and pressure in hell will increase until all hell breaks loose.

Of course, if hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in hell, than the temperature and pressure will drop until hell freezes over.
It was not revealed what grade the student got.

I understood all that. I mean the stretch of comparison or analogy. Thermodynamics is the boss of physics. I studied it in collage, undergrad. The Law of Entropy is one of the simplest and most obvious laws there is. There are more ways for things to be organized than disorganized. As obvious as it sounds the implications of that law are what made our Universe. And there is even more important law, energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only change its form.
Think about it for a second. The energy that I'm using to poke these words on my cellphone will never be as organized and concetrated as it is right now to allow my brain and my fingers to do that ever again. Until the end of times. I will have to eat some cereal and milk in the morning to do that again. Not really because I'm trying to make a point but if there was an energy accountant specifically dealing with my energy posting here and my cheerios intake that would be precisely the case.

My point is that if you get interested in science those trivial things I mentioned will start fitting into this big, beautiful big picture that wiltake you to stars and beyond. That territory is called "We don't know". And that is fun because we learn new stuff almost every day. Keep learning.

Good points, but your sixth sentence needs to be reversed. Disorder is more likely than order.

That's what the teacher was fishing for, however they left out one thing. You have to make an assumption that the souls going into hell are at a higher temperature than hell itself.

If you like this, then you should read Piers Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality. Same kind of humor, only book length. It sounds like something right out of there, science/magic.
