Most religions have nothing to do with reality, they run from it. No further explanation needed.

I'm not sure that's the problem.

Which religions are the ones that tolerate and defend rape? I missed it.

The Christian Bible, aka the Goat-herders Guide to the Galaxy, CLEARLY condones things such as Rapine, Pillage, Genocidal Warfare, Slavery, etc, etc, ad infinitum, or haven't bothered to read that book yet?

@Triphid

This is from eric.com:

When Jacob’s daughter, Dinah, was violated by the son of a neighboring ruler, Shechem, her brothers murdered him, his father, and the all of the men of his city in revenge (Gen. 34). After the Unnamed Concubine was gang-raped and left for dead by men in the tribe of Benjamin, the other tribes went to war against them upon hearing of her injustice (Jgs. 19-21). And after Tamar was raped by her half-brother, Amnon, her brother Absalom killed him, and incited a rebellion against his father, King David (2 Sam. 13). Rape was neither covered up nor ignored. Instead, it was answered and avenged. It was such a cultural convulsion that it was answered with outrage and further violence. The cases of rape in Scripture tell us something about the cases of rape we are hearing today: These women must be heard and they must be protected.

Deuteronomy 22:25-27
“But if in the field the man finds the girl who is engaged, and the man forces her and lies with her, then only the man who lies with her shall die. But you shall do nothing to the girl; there is no sin in the girl worthy of death, for just as a man rises against his neighbor and murders him, so is this case. When he found her in the field, the engaged girl cried out, but there was no one to save her.”

I was made to read parts of the Bible when I was young but it is of little interest to me now. I consider the Bible to be primarily a book of Jewish history. It is not God’s official word, given for our guidance, and it is not worth going into a fit over. We should just cast a sideways glance and move on. I in no way condemn anyone’s religion because of the brutality mentioned in the Bible. People in those days lived by a harsh desert code.

To rapine BTW, is just to plunder.

@WilliamFleming and as usual the Bible contradicts itself

Deuteronomy 22:28-29 New International Version (NIV)
28 If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, 29 he shall pay her father fifty shekels[a] of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.

@WilliamFleming Rapine, in the olden languages, i.e. LATIN, etc, meant as it sounds, RAPING, whereas Pillaging meant to rob, steal, plunder, etc.
I note, also, that you STATED you were MADE to read "PARTS" of the bible, why not ALL of the bible as have most Atheists?
Is it some kind of unwritten rule, etc, that Christians MUST only read prescribed selections, are they prescribed, perhaps, by some titular head of the family/religion, etc, and, as such, MUST be the only parts read lest one be proscribed by the said titular head?
How, I ask, can one simply READ any book and understand it by merely reading selected Chapters, passages, sentences/verses and NOT by reading the entire book in toto?
As for the 'historical factuality' of the Goat-herders Guide to the Galaxy, aka the bible, in relation to either Hebrew or any other ethnic 'history' then one would be better off believing in Fairy Tales written by the Brothers Grimm or Hans Christian Anderson since 'biblical history' is one of the biggest misnomers of them all.

@Triphid We are in total agreement regarding the Bible. The church I attended as a youth did not require us to read and study every word. At eighteen I left Christianity for good, and have no interest in poring over the Bible. There are other books that are more appealing. I do not want to waste any of my life in an angry, hostile attitude of arrogant condescension and judgmental condemnation of my fellow humans because of their religious opinions.

My dictionary says that rapine is plundering. The original meaning of “rape” was to steal, as in “Rape of the Lock”.

@Triphid, @LenHazell53

Absolutely, you are correct. The Bible is irrelevant to us. This is somewhat off topic anyway. What modern religion condones rape? I don’t know of any.

@WilliamFleming perhaps not condones but many victim blame, Wahhabism and Mormonism spring to mind. There was a huge scandal a year or so ago when a girl was "caught" by BYU campus police out after hours and dressed "immodestly" after being raped.
She was expelled for breaking the honour code and her testimony against her attackers discredited because... (drum roll please) she broke the honour code and so was considered "unreliable".

@WilliamFleming Technically the 3 main Abrahamic Religions are considered as being modern in terms of historical time/s.
IF you were to read the Goat-Herders Guide to the Galaxy THROUGHLY and page for page, word for word you WOULD find innumerable instances where rape, etc, IS condoned and even PROMOTED throughout it, especially in the O.T.

@WilliamFleming Word meanings are altered/changed with the times, sadly it IS a human thing to do so to suit the needs/desires of the present situation.
But it may be worth remembering that, for example, the English language is derived, by a big percentage, from much older and more ancient languages such Ancient Latin and Greek, etc.
One example springs to mind, in Latin a 'she-wolf' can mean both 'a female wolf' and a 'female brothel worker or a Brothel Owner,' i.e a Whore or a Madam, ergo the myth of Romulus and Remus being suckled by a she-wolf could easily have meant that they were suckled by either a female wolf OR a Whore or Brothel Owner, do you now get my drift?

@Triphid We are talking about two different things. I grew up in a Baptist Church. The Bible was read often, and was considered to be the word of God. Yet anyone should know that not every passage is instruction by God in how to live or how to act. Even if rape was condoned or even promoted in the old society of the Middle East, that has no bearing on us today. Rape is certainly not condoned by Baptists. Protestants view the Old Testament as background information leading up to the birth of Jesus. According to them, Jesus came to start a new world order based on love and compassion, and that is the story of the New Testament, not the Old. It is kind of silly to point out some passage in the Bible that clashes with modern mores and to wage a virulent campaign against all religion based on that.

In fact it is a total waste of my time to even talk about.

@WilliamFleming You know I've been waiting for you to come up with exactly the same words as are in your ENTIRE reply.
It is the Practicing Christian/Lapsed Christian circular logic, if it can loosely be called 'logic' that is, that is spouted with the tedious regularity, i.e. "the O.T. is no longer relevant since we now have a new Covenant with Jesus."
In other more simpler terms, " We tossed out the old BEGINNING of the Bible and started it from a point that suits US better."
Some logic that is, HOW can anyone expect to follow a book, self-proclaimed, to be the " Word/s of God" and simply discard the FIRST 40, yes count them FORTY, BOOKS which are intended to be the ORIGINS, etc, of the whole belief system?
Now, logically speaking here, is NOT God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit one and the same in the Trinity?
If that be so, which btw it is according to Biblical Scholars, then ANY Christian MUST adhere to the ORIGIN Covenant, i.e. the O.T. and view the N.T. as just mere amendments to it, NOT a whole NEW Covenant since, in fact, by doing so they are DENYING 1/3 of the Holy Trinity, are they not?

@Triphid I have no idea. Ask a Christian.

@WilliamFleming Well, to my mind at least you seem to be still quite in touch with your Christian side of things especially considering that you appear quite adept at citing bible passages ergo you should be able to answer the question/s, should you not?

@Triphid I have no interest in the subject. Find someone else to argue with.

@WilliamFleming " Not interested in the subject" yet you were insistent upon debating it with me, please explain how that works.

In a lot of cases rape is nothing to do with sexual release, it is all about asserting power, dominance and control, a disgusting crime of physical, social and emotional violence.

3

Religion can tolerate rape because it is then treated as a "sin" and not a crime!

1

Both men and women masturbate... What's your point?

@SadekAmine True by a penile penetrative definition of rape, but not all rapes by men are against women at least as many are against other men, they just don't get reported nearly so often because of the stigma many men feel when violated.
However if you count none penile sexual assault as rape, then women can and do rape both men and women in the moral if not legal sense of the word.

2

@SadekAmine Yes it does.

@SkotlandSkye Actually, it commands the rapist to marry his victim- the woman has no say in the matter as she is the property of her father and has been rendered worthless by virtue of being raped.

No idea what idiotic solution the bible has if a married women is raped - probably be stoned to death for adultery as in the quran.
