NZ premier vows to have gun laws tightened and semi automatic rifles banned. Where the fuck has she been living for the past ten years ?. Numerous mass shootings in the world and nutters like this are still allowed access to those weapons.

So, what you're saying is gun owners' rights should be trampled because of the actions of a few? Automobiles kill far more people than guns. So we must ban every car except Model Ts? How would we apply that idea to Freedom of Speech? And Freedom of the Press?

Is that worthy of a response ?. Nah I don't think so

Australia's tight gun laws might be a possible reason the arsehole went to New Zealand.

Of course, those people don't care where they carry out their atrocities. New Zealand was a soft touch because of lax gun laws, a small Muslim population and it has always been considered a safe country.

As the article pointed out, there have been attempts on three previous occasions to ban certain weapons and tighten up the gun laws in New Zealand, so it’s hardly fair to blame Jacinda Ardern for the failure to do so in the past. It often takes a tragedy of these epic proportions to focus the minds of politicians, sadly. When they do it’s often a bad law that’s put in place as a knee-jerk reaction, as happened in the UK, after the Dunblane school shooting a number of years ago.

@powder Laws are never going to stop this sort of thing happening completely, but laws without enforcement is pointless. Lack of manpower, lack of political will, complacency, incompetence......any manner of causes is stopping effective checks and control.

So the gun laws enacted after Dunblane were bad,? In what way?

@Moravian It covered only the banning completely of hand guns by the general public, that is obviously good, it didn’t cover rifles or shotguns which can still be obtained with a licence. We never had a gun culture in the UK, and prior to Dunblane had only ever had one previous mass shooting, at Hungerford in 1987 when Michael Ryan shot 16 people using a combination of handgun and two semi-automatic rifles. The law brought in after Dunblane stopped responsible Gun Club members from keeping their weapons at home in locked cabinets and they could only access them at licensed clubs, but it didn’t stop rifles and shotguns being held at home in locked cabinets. I know that farmers need to hold them for reasons of vermin control etc, but others can too, subject to obtaining a licence, but it seems perverse to be able to get a licence for one type of gun and not another. I’m pleased that we have gun control laws in place, and was just pointing out the anomalies. It’s the illegally held weapons we need to worry about the most, however, and at the moment, the carrying of knives.

@Marionville I don't see any problem with handguns for shooting at targets having to be kept at the gun club. After all that is the only place they can be used and it stops the possibility of them falling into the wrong hands either in transit or in theft from the home. It means that if a person is found with a handgun anywhere but at the club he/she is guilty of a crime. They should also be much more secure at the club.
Shotguns and sporting rifles are a different matter as the can legally be used elsewhere.
I had a shotgun which I used for rough shooting at the time of Dunblane which I kept in a proper gun cabinet but afterwards It was such a hassle getting approval each year. that I got rid of it I had to get a JP or someone of similar standing and as I hardly used it it was more trouble than it was worth.

Semi automatic rifles are something else and should be totally banned for use by the general public.

@Moravian you missed my point....I don’t object to guns only being used at registered gun clubs. I was pointing out the anomaly of not covering all weapons. The only people who were inconvenienced after this law was enacted were the responsible licensed gun users who use their weapons competitively. Semi automatic rifles are already banned for use by the general public in the UK .

@Marionville I can see the point in target practice with rifles and even shotguns, although clay shooting is the usual practice, but handguns are really just for shooting people, or maybe rats in some places, so I see it as no big deal if they are slightly inconvenienced.

@Moravian Still not getting my point....let’s call it a day!

@Marionville i think I get your point. pistol packers are being discriminated against but I disagree, anyway I couldn't care less. I have just returned from my local after watching one of the best rugby matches i have seen. Sorry that Ireland were beaten but England have been taken down a peg

@Moravian No you still don’t get my point, but it doesn’t matter. I was watching the matches at home...sorry that Ireland lost too, although as a Scot I was delighted that Scotland drew with England, wish it had been a win.....thought they were going to bring the Calcutta Cup home to Edinburgh, but not to be.

@Marionville Scotland retain the Calcutta cup as they won it last year at Murrayfield

@Moravian Ah...good.
