I think because of the nature of this site, people are not afraid to be more open and candid here. On the dating sites it's all about presenting an enticing persona, when I bet there are actually way more people on there who are lonely than here. Dating sites to me are disappointing because they often present a package of a person that doesn't represent the contents. Here you're going to get people who are more themselves, including the parts they wouldn't reveal in a dating site ad, good and bad. So, here you're getting to know someone from their personality, not just their stats. Of course, you still need to get to know someone personally and distance is an issue if you're looking for a partner, but I feel there's more potential to find like-minded people here. Quantity like on a dating site doesn't equal quality.

I think your evaluation of "dating sites" is largely accurate. However, I think it is reasonable to anticipate a quantity (hopefully very small) of people on these pages may be equally disingenuous.
@Millie @NoMagicCookie Agree on both replies. Need to be careful with anyone we meet online.
Distance and for me age. If they aren't over 300 miles away then most of them are 50/60s and no matter how great those people seem I'm just not attracted to it.

I was hoping that @Admin would add a category called "Getting Together" or something like that which would specifically be for organizing casual friendly get-togethers (coffee, comedy night, lunch, bowling, game night, motorcycle ride, attending a festival or event, potluck at home, hiking, whatever) of people who lived in the same general area - say within 150 miles or however far people want to travel for a get-together. I would happily organize something like that.

I would be interested in attending something like that. There's a bowling alley/ bar in my town that would be a good place for a get-together. Not certain how I would feel about inviting a large group of people I've never met to my house for a potluck, but if I've met them before at a public place it wouldn't be a problem.

How about create a group for it and then create events? Might be hard to get enough people but who knows... try it! 
@Admin thanks for your reply. I’m not a fan of groups. At least not yet. Maybe one day. Second thing is that I think it should be somewhere that all members can see all the time. It works well in other forums I have been in, specifically motorcycle riding forums where people genuinely like to get together.
Distance is a bitch. I will never relocate, and most men I'm interested in are the same way.
