religion ... pure and faultless is this: to help widows and orphans in need and avoiding worldly corruption. James 1:27

Make sure there is no widows, orphans, and worldly corruption in your your area and you would be free from religion.

No widows, no orphans to help no religion, go enjoy golf on the werkend. Unless you are apart of the non-golfers association.

There is a chapter in most states including yours. [centralparationalists.org]

Pick a venue (coffeehouse maybe?), talk to the owner of course, pick a day & time, put up flyers, use social media, let people know. Decide on a loose agenda...maybe some entertainment too? (Got any friends who play guitar?) Best wishes!

Start a group on MeetUp website.

that's what I was going to suggest also ... it does work. Pick a name which is pretty clear as to what it's about for the group. Locally I belong to, for example, the Monterey Skeptics group on Meetup. Use keywords like Agnostic, Atheist, Non-Religious, etc. so that if someone was searching for a group such as yours, their search terms will match and that will be how they find you. Also, Meetup (the organization) will send out an announcement to all their members in relevant area and they will use the key words and specified interests to determine to whom they will send it. The first month costs less than $20 (sign up for only one month, to test the waters).

You could contact other groups not in your area for advice on how to start one up. Check several and then work up a plan for yourself. I agree with Allamanda, don't call it a sect, that's a religious connotation.

Like any group, have a mission statement, goals, rules and behavior expectations. There are places that might let you meet for free on a regular basis. If it's a cafe then as a courtesy you might mention that as a free venue with food available it would be nice of the group to help support the sponsor as a thank you. Have fun!

How about starting a Meet-up group in your area?

I doubt that would be a sect, perhaps a group or club or community?

Allamanda Level 7 Apr 12, 2019

Yeah that would work for me. I would really just like something for others that feel the way I do. My town there literally a church on every other corner. It is ridiculous. I want something else somewhere people with like-minded views can have.

I have to agree that the word sect sounds cultish for some reason. How about "Freethinkers"?
