I've recently given up my faith because of a few comments people gave made to me here...Thanks! Now that I know for Sure there isn't a God, how do I decide what is right morally. Should I just base it on evolution?

Definitely not. Evolution is not a good guide for morals. Try starting with the Golden Rule — “do as you would be done to by others” — and go from there.

It's what you should have always based your morals on kindness and empathy do unto others as you would have them do unto you

Morals are how you treat others a religion does not give you therm you have them or you don't

It is hard to consider yourself moral if you have to write the rules down. Murder is bad, was it necessary to write this down or did you know this already?

Base it on not being a serial killer, stalker, atv enthusiast, cigarette smoker or abuser of animals & children.

Seriously? You can't figure out what is or isn't moral without Humpty-Dumpty in the sky to tell you? Since god was never real to begin with you've been deciding for yourself what's right or wrong all your life. Just keep doing it but without the magic people to "guide" you.

Do unto others before they do unto you. 🙂

I am a futurist so my values come from the kind of society I would like humans to build. Certain values are personal and based on what I think makes me a decent person, such as not harming people who are not a threat to me or my family. Other values like health care and education for all, are based on the kind of society I believe humans should aspire to create.

Thanks for this. I was just describing this idea to a friend, to act morally towards the way things should be rather than as they are or were

You already knew your morals, you didn't get them from the Bible. The Bible commands you to kill your neighbor if you see him working on Sunday, but you never did that. Because you know it's wrong...and honestly, what is moral for you, benefitting from the tourture, and death of another human? You didn't get your morals from the Bible because if you did, you would be a rotten human being

Try not doing stuff to others you wouldn’t want done to you. That’s pretty moral, if you ask me.

This post sure feels disingenuous to me. Perhaps it is residual dishonesty from "your faith".

Just like when you were a believer, you knew 'for Sure' that a god existed, your newfound certainty that a god doesn't exist is as false as your previous belief.

If you really need to learn morality without the Buybull, look up the definition of Empathy. That and the Golden Rule will see you through.

I thought the same thing. Seemed a bit over the top scamming to me. Especially the jab at evolution..

First, I would never conclude for sure there is no god. Try not to conclude much of anything to absolute certainty. Keeping an open mind is what got you here. Keep it open.

Morality is something that can seem tricky but it is fairly simple and intuitive. You probably already have it figured out, but may not be able to articulate it. Just keep thinking about it and do some reading if that helps.

I would definitely NOT base it on evolution. Biological evolution is an amoral process that can be downright cruel most of the time. Basing morality on this can give rise to the ‘Might Makes Right’ ideas that lead a certain 1940s European nation of good people to commit atrocities.

@powder ?

Was that comment for me or OP?

@powder I agree and also do dismiss the notion of gods the same way as I do for unicorns; that is to say I don’t dismiss it completely.

@indirect76 so you are open to the possibility of the existence of unicorns?? Okay... I guess...

@powder yeah, me too, but I'm not leaving the door open for unicorns and tooth fairies and leprechauns and Sasquatch and stuff that makes no sense... like gods.

Why 'base' it on anything? Make your own choices and accept your own consequences and credit.

Years ago my wife pointed out to me how close the classic Greek Stoics were to my personal philosophy. How's that for saying make your own answer... then answering.
