From the "Well, that was unpleasant" files:

Just got into it (a little) with my nephew's wife, regarding Easter. She said I was being "disrespectful" about other people's beliefs, and I bit back. I usually let this kind of thing go, because it's not worth arguing with family, but it just hit me really wrong this morning.
Someone said "Happy Easter" to me, and I responded with "meh". It wasn't meant as disrespect, I'm not just interested in being wished something I don't believe in, and being expected to respond in kind.
I told her straight up that I was tired of my beliefs being disrespected by those who want theirs respected.
She tried dragging christmas into the conversation but that went nowhere.
I'm guessing that she's not as agnostic as she used to claim she was.
I'm just so tired of always being the one expected to put my own feelings aside because other people think I should.

Our way of looking at things should be respected . It should fall under the first amendment. Your family member needs to rethink her views.

I'm pretty sure I made that clear.
LOL

When you are the one who always seems to step back, it does get frustrating and eventually, you will explode in anger or frustration.

You made your stance known and that should be respected. It is understandable if people don't know where your anger is coming from and then you lose it...but you seem to have done the right thing but standing up for YOUR values...

It is tough so hang in there!

Thanks.

My sister in law texted me that her mom was upset because her brother (my hubby) did not call to wish her a Happy Easter. I decided to just tell her the truth - which is - that he said" its a bullshit holiday" so he didn't call anyone. I could literally hear her head explode.... aahhh well. They'll get over it....or not. 😉 🙂

I just try to avoid the whole unpleasant issue as I would respond in a similar way and it would deteriorate into a mess. The bottom line is respect for each other and their lives.

Evidently, that is not always possible.

Easter is a spring fertility festival first and foremost - hence the eggs and bunnies. I have no objection to wishing people a happy Easter. We need festivals and celebrations so I always try and celebrate spring (fertility), autumn (harvest), and midwinter (end of the year, start of the next). Religion doesn't have to come into it.

You are free to feel about anything you please, however you please.
I detest most of these "holidays". I don't think we "need" them.
If I want to ignore them, that's my right. I do not have to allow myself
to be dragged into them out of some perverted sense of "belonging".

You are free to do as you please.

@KKGator Of course you are free to join in holidays or not, as you please.

At times a nasty bite back helps to draw a very clear line for both family and friends. Next time she will not pull this shit on you again

I wish people 'Happy Easter' and they say it back. To me, and sometimes to them, it's just meant to be a fun time. There are numerous sporting events (not that they interest me much) and people go on vacation over the long break. I sometimes forget that it has anything to do with religion.

Lots of luck!!!! You know, they don't get it. They have god on their side. What have you got? Intelligence. Clear thinking. Insightfulness. Great values. Compassion. Courage. What have they? God, whoever he is.

U only live once . Every breath , every word , it's what u leave behind one day . I agree w u . I am not going out looking for arguments , and I have 0 desire englighting anyone at this point . If provoked , I respond thou . My life , my rules . I am 48. Nobody pays my bills than me .
Wishing me happy Easter at grossery store , sure , smiling back , " the lord is risen indeed sister ". I am not gonna educate the 7 dollar an hr cashier . Wishing me happy Easter at a gathering while u know I am an atheist , no ma'am . Pending if I am wearing a skirt or pants , u ll get " I don't think so " , or the middle finger . And I ll sit back w a smile . Yeah . That cuntasaurus .

She's actually a really good person. It just really, REALLY hit me wrong.
Like I said, normally, I do not bite back, but today I did.

I'm not big into telling individuals how they should or shouldn't act or speak in specific situations. However, it is obviously very natural for people to comment on or criticize what other people do or say, since most of us do it fairly frequently. We all tend to think in terms of "should" or "shouldn't" very often.

Maybe, like she said, they have shown disrespect for her beliefs on prior occasions.

Can you not simply smile & say thanks to a kind gesture? There’s way worse things in this world to get offended over.

No, I fucking cannot.
Why should I have to always be the one to be tolerant of other people's fucking disrespect? I don't give two shits about their "kind gestures".
Piss off.

i notice that some of my facebook "friends" are hedging their bets and are wishing everyone a happy Easter and a happy passover.
One celebrates.a man being killed by being nailed to a cross and then coming back to life and the other celebrates children not being killed by their god. take your pick.

I understand your frustration. I love Easter because it’s a pagan celebration of the fertility of Spring. I usually have no trouble embracing that side of this day. I also like to say happy, humorous things to people who try to drag me into their drama. Hooray for bunnies and eggs!! I love the sexy goddess Eostre!
