Here in England we don't have much by way of mountains, but snowdonia and the cairngorms can go from bright sunshine to freezing cloud in minutes - but every time I go up there are people in light trainers, T shirts, shorts and a bottle of water - no pack of gear, no extra clothing, not even a map or compass ... idiots who deserve the hypothermia

Too many climbers are unprepared

For heaven's sake! Idiots. They chose one of the most dangerous routes on Mt. Rainier.

"How will I get down?" is uppermost in my mind when hiking.

When you climb mountains, you need to be able to descend safely. You don't let your tent or gear blow away. Use your head. Be prepared. Tie or weigh your gear down with rocks.

Mountains create their own weather.

My 1976 two-man tent (three in a pinch) survived hurricane-level winds, three-day blizzards, pounding rain and never leaked or blew away.

In high winds, we roped the tent to a tree. Put rocks over the stakes.
