‪This sweet little baby has been resting in my grandparent’s yard the past couple of days. I noticed something was wrong with it’s little eye the closer I got to it. They said it wasn’t like this yesterday. I hope it heals soon but it doesn’t seem like it will on its own. It seems so sweet. Let me get right up on it even. My grandpa doesn’t want to call animal control. Says it’s mama has been visiting every day and doesn’t want to separate them. I’m going to leave a local wildlife rehabilitation group’s number just in case he changes his mind the more we monitor it. Poor baby.

It needs help if it is not moving

Insects will bother it's eye. This presents a great problem because animal control could help the deer but then maybe mama will not want it any longer because of the human interference. Someone needs to make some phone calls to see just how true this is and what could be done.

Those look like ticks around the eye so you should really contact an animal rescue group that can help that fawn. You should also spray the yard to eliminate the tick infestation or you could end up with them transferring to your pets or family.

@1EarthLovingGal Possibly but ticks also leave scarring and animals often scrape the areas that are infested to try to rid themselves of the parasites. That would account for the scarring.

@1EarthLovingGal This is what ticks look like on a fawn....

@1EarthLovingGal When they have gorged themselves deer ticks look like this...

@1EarthLovingGal If you do determine it’s ticks, make sure to stay away/check yourself all over, keep your hair way away from it. Deer ticks carry Lyme disease and it’s super nasty business.

@1EarthLovingGal He is right which is why I suggested spraying the yard. I would suggest Seven liquid as it is both effective and inexpensive as well as long lasting. Don't spray flowers just the ground and any non-flowering plants and it will rid the yard of ants, fleas, and ticks for up to a year depending on conditions... It also works on termites...

@Lizard_of_Ahaz I have dogs, my yard is full of singing birds, occasional skunks, possums, even a coyote in this little city. I would Never use broad-spectrum killers like Seven...hey, I want to be out there too!

@AnneWimsey Seven doesn't harm animals when used correctly the main concern is not spraying flowering plants which could kill pollinating insects...

You need to call Wildlife Rehabilitation NOW....this fawn will die from an infection like this, or a predator will find it because the infection gives off a scent predators can easily find (fawns are scentless, normally)

@1EarthLovingGal you call. You know better regardless of what your grandfather thinks. You have a choice the fawn doesn't.

@1EarthLovingGal they will not rat you out to him! Call!

@1EarthLovingGal Animal Control and Wildlife Rehab are two separate entities, and their names obviously describe their jurisdictions and responsibilities. They usually stay out of each other's way. The deer falls under Wildlife Rehab. I don't think the mother deer would abandon her young if a human touches it. People rescue wild animal young in trouble all the time and the mother will watch and wait for it's return. Mother deer normally leave their young alone during the day, especially if it can't keep up while they forage. The first thing any wild animal expert will advise for an injured baby is to get it aid; keep it safe and quiet, call a vet or bring it to one and they should have the nearest AR number handy. Also make sure they are aware of the location where the mother left it. Take pictures. Bottom line: help it if you care and if you can.

@1EarthLovingGal Birds will do that, but not mammals unless the young is really sick or gravely injured. Even then there are exceptions. When I was a kid my mom told me never to touch animals or they'd die or be abandoned (again that's just birds) but that was also because she didn't like animals and didn't want to deal with it. I think modern humans have lost touch with the natural world, don't know squat and don't care... except for us godless freaks right? You should know, Earth loving gal.
