I am fairly new to this site and find it intriguing and uplifting plus the dialoging helps me learn. I have often asked myself how I would have reacted were I to participate in the test of compliance where one is to administer shocks to another for failing certain tests. I know this must come across the minds of others who witness these tests. Most administer shocks even though the other person (falsely) is screaming in pain. Of course, in hindsight, most would say they would not go on but the evidence proves otherwise. Everyone I have asked about their supposed reaction has said they would have stopped. Also, is there evidence about those few who declined to proceed when the level reached a certain point?
To me this paints a realistic picture humans – neither bad nor good just surviving, or, often unconsciously reacting. However, one must rule out mob mentality as there is no mob present in this experiment.

I may have agreed to an experiment but when I saw where it was going I can't imagine continuing with it.
Welcome to the site.

Some people can suspend their ability to empathize when accountability is shifted to a higher authority. Some people are more sensitive and are unable to shift that responsibility. It's sad that the percentage is usually higher in the first instance.

Welcome.

Uh oh, I am imagining the old adage "be careful what you wish for".

Can you explain this more simply I am interested but I am also kinda lost

It is an experiment where two people are asked to take part in an 'important' experiment. The 2 supposedly draw straws to see who will be the test taker and the other the test giver (the selection is fixed and the taker is a plant). The taker goes into a room and is told to answer some questions. The giver is told to ask questions and for every wrong answer administer a shock. Every wrong answer elicits a stronger shock until the taker is screaming in (mock) pain. The giver(s) are seen as being uncomfortable but almost always continue regardless of the screams from the other room.

Ok and this is to rule out mob mentality how?

Reminds of a movie where they ran a test in a simulated prison, half were guards the other half prisoners. Did not go well. There was a lot of ego badness, not much surviving. How do you come to the conclusion that 'humans or neither bad nor good just surviving' from the paragraph presented above?

Is this the movie you are talking about. [prisonexp.org]

This movie was based on a real experiment and it is a very disturbing view of the human condition.

@betpaq Thanks, I knew someone would have the title. Yes, extremely scary.
