Are there brands you don't use for environmental or other reasons? I'm a little pissed off because the coffee creamer I use was out of stock at my local store so I bought Nestle instead. I've been boycotting them for decades. In the late 70s, early 80s, they were pushing powdered baby formula on third world countries with questionable water quality. Their reputation's only gone downhill from there IMHO. What brands do you refuse to buy and why?

Most brands no longer belong to the founders if that brand - they are owned by hedge funds or huge holding companies. Many of their 'products' are made by third party 'dark facilities' - factories based in cheaper countries. Nestle is technically a Swiss company. Very few of their products have been made there!
Here's a link to the world's main brand name owners.

@ProudMerrie my pleasure. I no longer give any brand special consideration. Did you know that, at least in Europe, Hershey (American) and Cadbury (English) are both made in Holland, on the same machinery until it comes to packaging. Neither is the original recipe!

This is the rip off charity fund raising company - APPCO. This is just about them ripping off their employees!

I think choosing or not choosing to buy something is one of the most powerful political decision you can make. Probably even more powerful than when you vote. I think you change the face of the world every time you buy something. Will you encourage the local little guy, the fair and ethical workers coop or the creepy mega multinational billionaire?
Of course, it's not always easy, not always obvious. Too often, the market seems to be tilted and rigged by the big guys.
I'll certainly pick a credit union over a big bank. As much as I can, a local product instead of an imported one.

Any of the large national or regional banks.
I saw a diagram that showed that about 90% of all processed food brands are owned by about 5 companies.

Sorry for all the chocolate lovers but recent long post in the Washington Post described how many chocolate companies buy their product from countries that use harsh child labor. Most things we take for granted often have a very dark side.

@ProudMerrie It mentioned that Hershey and Mars were aware and working on the problem with limited success. I don't subscribe to all the papers and have ad blocker so I cannot get the Washington Post. here is another link: [fortune.com]

Any company that uses GMOs, high fructose corn syrup, palm oil, nitrate, nitrite, animal products that contain antibiotics or hormones
Walmart
Monsanto--now Bayer
Roundup
Any product that contains BPA, PVC, dioxins, phthalates, vinyl chloride, ethylene dichloride, lead, cadmium
All of the above are manufactured by many companies

I’m with you on Nestle. Aldi for their apparent ill-treatment of animals, especially chicken. Clothing brands from SE Asia. Charities which want a regular monthly donation. There was an article a year or so ago about a company (I’ve forgotten their name) that administer the credit card/direct debit accounts for these charities and take 93% of the revenue! I’ll try to find out their name and post it.

I give a credit card and a debit card contribution to two different organizations. I've been assured by by both the bank and the credit card company that they take exactly 2%. When I was County chair of the Democratic party here I encouraged people to give automatically to our organization and our bank charged exactly 2% for the automatic debit.

@Lorajay it’s not the bank, it’s the company that collects the money for the charity.

Try to avoid Chinese products. Those are not only mostly poisonous but made with slave labor.

@ProudMerrie Yes. See drywalls made in China.

@ProudMerrie Here in Florida approximately 50 thousand houses had to be rebuilt because of the smell of chicom drywall. The Chinese director of the manufacturer killed himself. Interesting!

@ProudMerrie Yes

I'm with you on the Nestle thing - won't buy their bottled water. Papa John's Pizza - not a chance after listening to the owner's position on offering his employees health insurance. Monsanto is another one on the no way list.....

Nestle, now Starbucks due to public water being stolen by nestle. Monsanto anything. Any company using GMO ingredients, it's a long list.

Anything Monsanto. No Bertolini pasta- homophobia. Nestle is another, for taking water rights, bottling then selling back the same water to folks who can’t afford it. I boycott various businesses: Hobby Lobby, Coke Filet, among others.
