I guess I really don't see why I even need to defend a piece of clothing designed to protect the wearer in extremely hot and dry climates. It seems to me like having to defend a female Eskimo for wearing an anorak to stay warm in a brutally cold climate.

@Jacar FGM is absolutely abhorrent and to me so is male circumscision. It is haraam for males to wear shorts in Islam and no, to be honest I do not like to see children in headscarves. It is not required in the Qoran and is entirely cultural. The problem for me is that you are extrapolating the practices of some minor groups to all Muslims. That is not accurate. I am an atheist. I do not believe in god. However I live amongst Muslim people and to be honest I do not recognise this hateful portrayal of this particular group. FGM is an African cultural practice that predates all Abrahamic religions. It is a dreadful practice and with education it is on the decline. It has spread to Western countries with the natural movement of people. Some of the FGM victims I have encountered were Muslim but they were all African (Somali). I have seen the damage this practice does and wish we could confine it to history like foot binding and skull elongation.
I am not an apologist, I do not believe in god. The end. I do not believe it is my role to protylise to believers, I accept people as they are. I have Muslims friends, a Jewish ex hubby, Christian friends and even a number of Pagan friends. Everyone knows I am an atheist and they are all cool with it. You should try turning off fox news and read some decent academic literature.
