Is it just me or is it those who refuse to except the world for what it is that seek out religion?

I’m sure from their perspective, I am the one that does not accept the world as it is.

I think it's based on fear, fear of the horrors and violence in the world. It's like addictions (food, alcohol, sex, illegal drugs, shopping) a way to escape reality, "I have to be high to get by."

Most Christians I know are obsessed and fearful of death and what happens after death.

And no, it's not just you.

I would assume that for most what is real and what is religion are received basically at the same time. Acknowledging something does not necessitate or imply acceptance. I guess it's just you. 😉

Most people are born into religion not seeking it out.

I think most of the most destructive forms of religion are carried by people who didn’t seek it out at all. They were born into it and indoctrinated into it. And because of that subsequently refuse to accept reality. They don’t refuse reality first and then seek out religion as far as I’ve seen. Same with atheists with shitty, bigoted or selfish political stances. They shook the indoctrination of religion but not the mirror image of those shitty assumptions in their view of the world.

The people that seek out religion later in life having not been born to it are atheists who never examined what they believe or decided for sure; they were just born without religion, never learned enough to defend a solid foundation of why they don’t believe, and eventually something traumatic like injury illness bereavement or jail caused them to think they need a crutch and the believers found a gullible sod down on their luck.

I think most people do not want to accept the world as is whether religious or not. What makes religious people so vulnerable and at the same time so defensive is their refusal to accept facts and their beliefs in things that are not realistic.

Why not accept the fact that no one understands this world except superficially and that reality is a profound and staggering mystery.

The roots of religion lie in deep awareness, awe and reverence in the face of that mystery but a lot of those who claim to be religious are either ego ridden organizers or robotic followers with little true reverence.

I think that's fairly accurate. It seems to me that there are three kinds of people that can't accept the world. Those that, as you say, can't accept it and would rather give up trying to change it for the better by pretending they are surrendering that duty to some imaginary magic being, Then there are those who just plain give up trying and say things like, "Whatayagonnado? Amirite?", and finally those that actually seek ways to change what upsets them about the world or do their best to actively understand it better.

Welcome to the asylum. Enjoy your stay.

It's not just you.

I think there are many reasons for seeking religion! some seek it to validate their world view. Others are seeking answers that fit their world view. And still others are sheep who want a leader and religion seems to fit the bill. I am an atheist because I questioned the view of the church and was told not to worry my little head about that!

I see a failure to cope, for sure.

There is no one reason why people believe.

some do. it's accept, by the way, not except. different words, different meanings. i'd say it would be more accurate to say that people who seek out religions refuse to accept the world, rather than saying that those who refuse to accept the world seek out religion. some seek other things instead.
