There are people apparently genuinely upset that a black actress has been selected to play a FICTIONAL character. Give me a break. It's stuff like this that makes the aliens fly right by muttering "What's wrong with these people?"

Racism, plain and simple.

I feel thrilled that a black young woman was chosen to play Ariel in the live, musical production. This is inspiring to all black girls.

It's about time!

Yet no one is upset that the fairytale is not being told as it was written - She dies in the original. But, by goodygod, change it to a black person and all Hell. Maybe if she dies in this one it will be okay for the racists.

Well. Mermaid goals have naught to do with race. All we want is to ensnare as many men as possible, and drag them to the bottom of the sea. 😂😂😂

I am so glad to be able to say "not my kind of people--stupid"...sheesh...a freaking fictional mermaid cartoon? What truly is wrong with them?

"What's wrong with these people?"

A lot more than we have time to delve into here, that's for sure.

Similarly perplexed by folks upset by the thought of a non-white James Bond, Santa or Sherlock Holmes, or women playing Dr. Who or the Ghostbusters. Not just silly, but WTF silly!

@NoPlanetB Of course, if we want to get truly silly, we can start arguing about what color Jesus “really “ was ...

I mostly agree. sherlock holmes would depend on the actor - please no more of the h&w nonsense. My main complaint with the Ghostbusters is that it was one of a string and felt like the studios were pandering - 'look we can just sub women into a story with an existing fan base and people must like it.' As for Doctor Who all I can say is it took them long enough!
