This is what think is a major problem in our country. Our leaders are pretty bright and well educated. So there's no way virtually all, 535 our of 535, believe in utter religions nonsense. We did have Barney Frank some years ago, who was gay as well as agnostic, but he's gone. So, being there's no god I can rip off all I want without worrying about divine judgment. I can make all the corruption money I can without worry.

All I have to do is maintain a hypocritical facade and I can live like a king on the public's dime. Politicians don't even think about what they're doing to the working class. Like Christopher Hitchens says: Religion poisons everything.

As an Atheist, I had to forgo politics, especially at my rural location. Part of my motivation as an Atheist is to see that some day others will have the opportunity I didn’t.

Conversely, I was very active on many a campaign, meeting many politicians. I witnessed them deciding to run, at home on their off time, and in about every conceivable public venue.

Statements like yours are naive, at best. What kind of idiot would make, not only as broad a statement as that - but in doing so demean those I still consider friends?

Your first premise isnt totally correct. Not all the members of the House and Senate (the House worse than the Senate) are well educated. Select members of the Freedom Caucus have demonstrated a lack of higher level education.

Not only that, but a degree does not necessarily a guarantee of being either wise or intelligent. There are a lot of ways to cheat your way through a college degree (and the ethics of some of these politicians would not put it past them).

You said it better than I could.....I agree 100%. And religious certainly doesn't guarantee a higher moral fiber content....ha ha.

I disagree with your first premise: our leaders are pretty bright and well educated.

A lot if not most went to Harvard or Yale Law School.

they may be well educated but i don't believe they're necessarily bright. the one thing they have in common with all successful politicians is that many of them are sociopaths. none are honorable or honest.

Many studies and the actions of religious people show that you have your perspective reversed. Believers are less honest and more selfish than nonbelievers. They are perfectly content thinking that no matter what they do they are forgiven by a higher power.

What studies? Please name one.

And there are also findings that show non-believers often know more about different religions than believers. [npr.org]

@mojo5501 I guess I didn't express the problem properly. My question is how can Congressperson declare themselves to be Christians and yet be so corrupt and venal.

@mojo5501 I've been driving all afternoon and didn't get a chance to reply before you. Thanks for covering.
