If God is God He is not good
If God is good He is not God
Take the even take the odd
{If God is good He is not God}

--Archibald Macleish [I repeated the last line to make it sound more quoteable]

it looks to me like you repeated the first line not the last.

Yes! What I meant to say was that the last line was not put there by the poet, but one I put there by repeating an earlier one. Thanks.

Huh?

But if God is dog then is he a good boy?

I read Archibald MacLeish was an American poet and writer, Librarian of Congress & won three Pulitzer Prize, (1892~1982).

This Macleish..... who is he?

1

Sounds very Scottish .

Was he stoned when he said that? It's nonsense compared to the brilliance and relevance of Epicurius.

JimG Level 8 July 14, 2019

Epicurus didn’t actually say that. It’s the good old Christian ruse of grafting ideas on to figures of the axial age to attempt to give it authority by antiquity.

It’s from a C3rd text. Can’t remember who but not one of the household names.

@Geoffrey51 I didn't know, but whoever said it made a lot more sense than this post.

@JimG that is true. I just get on my hobby horse when this quote frequently gets attributed to Epicurus. The problem with taking certain internet information at face value.

Say wha....

I think that A. M. may himself have been quoting Epicurus. There is certainly a clearer version of a very similar remark attributed to him.

Yep, the quote is not a good representation of the Epicurus paradox.

3

why would you want to alter something you found quotable enough to quote, in order to make it sound more quotable?

g

zing, huh? Actually kind of demonstrating the whole principle without realizing it i guess huh? Paradox solved, lol

And if you change it; it's no longer a quote, and it still doesn't mean anything.

@JimG Interesting . You've been on here since November 2917 , but have no fans . I wonder why ?

@Cast1es @JimG "Interesting. You've been on here since November 2917, but have no fans. I wonder why?"
Probably because he's from the future.

@joeymf86 If you're talking about me, I think you've misread the year.

If you mean Cast1es, I'll have to take your word for it because he seems to have blocked me.

@JimG Cast1es wrote what was in quotations in my first reply. I was making a joke regarding her typo of the year you joined.

@joeymf86 oh ok, I can't see her posts; so I wasn't sure. She's very brave to tag me and block me, so I can't see it. Thanks for clarifying.

@joeymf86 I guess the fact that I don't display everything publicly explains the rest of her comment. Too bad she can't see this.... Not really.
